As a matter of curiosity, did Matthew Mendelsohn get paid for the article that did not run, or was compension contingent on publication? It is none of my business, but how much of a fee do these long features normally carry.

Yura Dick (which is an amusing name, considering you were being very dickish), if you look at the Staff page (right below), it says Wemple is the editor of the City Paper, who also happens to write this blog (and print articles). I have a feeling he has some idea how editing works. It sounds like you're close to the subject or something, thus the angry reaction. And in any case, this is a completely valid thing to write about -- did the publisher kill the story? Why was it killed? Are those valid reasons? And so on. All questions worth asking.

>>>It was a feature, it was really long and had no news angle at all. And from a freelancer to boot<<<<

It was a feature? In a magazine? No shit, Sherlock. Have you ever read the Post magazine? Any magazine? Most of the main stories are written by freelancers. And they tend to be, um, longer feature pieces. You should get off the internet right now and start reading actual stories.

I think you perform a valuable service by serving as a watchdog to what is, essentially, the only paper in town. But big newspapers spike stories all the time, for good reasons and bad. This story did not reveal that the president was getting blown, or that Bush was blowing the Saudis. It was a feature, it was really long and had no news angle at all. And from a freelancer to boot. Not a real controversial call.

get a life. There's way more that goes into being the executive editor of a newspaper than killing one story because it's features limbs and pain. Figure out something better to do with your time than criticizing people who are busting their butts trying to deal with the the changes in the delivery of media these days. You bloggers are a waste of time, space and internet resources.
