Catania: Barry Should Apologize To Public
Councilmember David Catania just released this statement to the press on the Barry saga:
"The Council met this afternoon to discuss how to proceed in the wake of the latest allegations of impropriety on the part of Mr. Barry. We did not discuss the possibility of censure or other sanctions at this time, not because those actions are off-the-table but because the time for that discussion will occur after we are able to review the results of Mr. Bennett's investigation. I do think, however, that enough information is known today to conclude that Mr. Barry owes the residents and taxpayers of the District of Columbia a public apology. His refusal to do so continues a longstanding pattern of Councilmember Barry refusing to take personal responsibility for his actions.
I left today’s press conference because to have stayed may have given the false impression that Councilmembers, including myself, are rallying to Mr. Barry’s side or condoning his actions. This is not the case."
This is the strongest statement so far from a D.C. Councilmember concerning their colleague.

The one who continues to look weak in all this is Vince Gray. He should never have let Barry speak to the press at yesterday afternoon's press conference. Barry makes everything about Barry. The Bennett investigation is about protecting the Council's supposed integrity. By Gray allowing Barry to speak and once again hog the limelight, Gray shot himself in the foot. Barry embarrassed Gray and basically said what the investigation's conclusion was going to be.
Vince Gray needs to step up and order Bennett's investigation to focus on ALL of Barry's use of taxpayer money, as well as earmarks he inserted in the budget for non-profit groups that do not exist. Otherwise, Gray is participating in nothing more than a whitewash.
Gray needs to finally man up against Barry. Otherwise the Vincent C. Gray will stand for Coward.

Jason I agree with your post. While no one wants to restrict creative expression, it may be time to visit Moderated Lists/Blogs or at least cap the comments at a predetermined length/time limit. I say this because lately, any article that deals with Race or Sexual Preference sets off triggered "hate spam" from folks with no clear interest in what affects WCP readers or the areas in which they live. Some folks just like to be combative, vent negatively and rant about their own ideologies. Ignoring them, while powerful, still doesn't stop their posts. Rowdy kids will be rowdy kids. Unfortunately, with Child Abuse laws being what they are and certain psychological theories, corporal punishment ain't what it used to be. When I grew up, it didn't take much for an adult to say something to kids who they saw up to no good. Not saying that every kid had the fear of God in them, but that type of intervention kept me from even THINKING of doing something wrong. Call it extended parenting, but it worked. Somewhere in the child rearing of DC kids, parents got slack and allowed kids to do/say whatever they want with no accountability. Apathy, along with lawyers and personal rights advocates skewed the lines in which "strangers" could say things to kids. Profanity on a Metrobus?!?...not when I was a teenager. You could be put off a bus for that! Not only that, but the bus driver would say something to you if not the other passengers. God forbid somebody on the bus knew a cousin-of-a-friend that knows you. You'd have a beating waiting for you when you got home.
What I'm saying is that kids need REMEDIAL lessons in respect, manners, and being considerate. They are not getting it at home, not really getting it at school, and not held accountable anywhere else. I'd rather be cursed at by a kid in a group for telling him/her kindly to "change their tone" than sit and ignore their abusive language. Ignoring their behavior has got us in this mess now. In fact, the kids are banking on the fact (in a daring way) that nobody will say anything. So, say something anyway. Even if the message doesn't stick with that kid, a peer of theirs would get the message. So a message resonating in that kid is at least better than helping none at all.
I'm not saying that all will be responsive, but as one whose gone to church more than a few times, condemning the world and waiting for Jesus to return doesn't do too much either.
I say this because I've actually been in environments where "white" privileged kids were rowdy, using profanity as such. I've been in environments where "black" kids were rowdy too. Sad part about it...sometimes their parents were in the vicinity, which means that something is lacking. I can't tell people what to do in their households to rear their kids, but something has got to change. Poor behavior is being modeled by the parents AND the respective media outlets. I get tired like I----beingBlack, but I also get tired of hearing folks say, "I don't know what to do?" I SAY DO SOMETHING! Don't let apathy set in.
Yep, it could be dangerous out there. But what is the alternative? Doing Nothing? Going home and complaining? Some Christian folk in seeing this type of behavior wouldn't even be prompted to pray! Now that is sad.
Don't give up, or give in to the stereotypes. If you aren't a criminal then there's a good chance that some of the youth aren't either. Work from that statistic instead.

Renamed Georginas(sp?) Its history origin haunts it but it truly is a great place to meet and eat. It is quite safe as all the government officials patron it. There are literally only 2 1/2 sit down restaurants in Ward 8; with development down the pike I hope more take a chance here. But you simply must try it some day if you like soul food or like to meet friends for laughs and lunch.
True Story-
Years ago (maybe 20?) there was a black woman cooking the food and a young man doing the dishes and cleaning. One day she fell ill and couldn't make it to work. Apparently this dishwasher had been watching (studying spice secrets and techniques) her cook over time. He convinced Steve the owner to allow him to take over for the days the cook was out. That man has been cooking Players' foods ever since. Putting his Latino foot in those dishes! He's been loyal to the owners - has family members come in to help when they have big events and catering and he is the nicest person you'd ever want to meet. A Latino is the head chef at Ward 8's favorite Soul Food Gig.

For the first time since..........My daughter and I went yesterday for lunch. She loves it because of the big juke box. 'My friends' love it because of the different men in uniforms that 'they' consider eye candy walking in and out all day. I was actually hesitant to go (NOT SCARED) because it is a frequent MB watering hole and they go waaaayyyy back w/ him. It was a wonderful afternoon for my daughter and me. They made us feel welcomed - only difference is now they all refer to me by my name as I'm not sure they knew it before. ha
It isn't a a 4-star, but I'm sure you all will like it if you miss your grandmas home cooking and if your nose isn't up in the air. And all I know of that happens in the back is a patio for crab feasts and the entrance to a car wash.

Q welcome to the real well, because the Dr. Gates and Sgt. Crowley incident have sat race relations back in this country. Reading this and other blogs like the Washington Post, WTOP, Booker Rising, and others race is still an issue and racism is alive and well in the United States. Spineless politicians like Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Congress, and the D.C. Council are afraid to discuss the topic of race and racism. We live in a very political correct society. As a registered Blue Dog Democrat, I am against political correctness. I support free speech regardless of how offensive it may be. People should be able to say what's on their minds and not be afraid there're going to be labeled a racist or homophobe.

Q, I don't support gay marriage and I am against illegal immigration. This doesn't make me anti gay or hispanic. Illegal alien is the term used by the U.S. Government and how is this being offensive. Read on the back of a Green card, it states Resident Alien. We have to stop this political correctness. Diversity and political correctness is destroying the United States of America. I enjoy living in a segregated community or living around educated people who look like me and share my views on getting the neighborhood clean and safe. Catania is pompous. The fact that he admittedly supported no-bid, one time (indefinate) grants to non-profit campaign contributors at the expense of other local tax-paying service providers who could provide the same services at equal or greater savings to the city is nothing to be proud of, it is dispicable. Other tax-paying non-profits denied the right to bid for those tax dollars have overhead expenses as well.
That said, it is time for both he and Barry to retire from the Council and allow for some younger, moderate energy take over. This old crowd, to include Jack Evans, have come to be too comfortable, they find that they are "entitled" to be on the Council.
