Stoner Art at Civilian Art Projects

There's nothing in Louis Jacobson's pick about "All Night Flight" at the Civilian Art Projects to suggest that artist Erick Jackson is a stoner. And yet, and yet:

"In making “All Night Flight,” a series of several dozen pencil-on-paper drawings, Erick Jackson plumbed the imagery of his childhood, from cheesy TV tableaux to a basket of tortilla chips, incongruously shown with ketchup and mustard squeeze bottles. Jackson’s drawing style is uneven and is showcased most effectively in his Munch-like landscapes, which are dreamy, stylized, and boldly colored: a nuclear apocalypse in ochre hues; figures lingering in a verdant nocturne; and the Golden Gate Bridge in sickly green, set against an ominous, red-yellow sky."

Read Jacobson's entire pick and then head over to Civilian Art Projects and decide for yourself if Jackson's work evokes a THC wonderland.

WED.-SAT. FROM NOON-6 P.M., THROUGH JUNE 6, AT CIVILIAN ART PROJECTS, 406 7TH ST NW. FREE. (202) 347-0022.

Sorry if this disappoints, but Mr. Jackson does not smoke the weeds. This work comes from a a vivid and hyper-active imagination from a mind taking shape amide the drug induced 70s. It's a reflection of that time but it is rooted in the present. 67 images in 60 days, can a stoner do that? Maybe, maybe not.

Further, Jacobsen notes Erick's uneven drawing style. This is purposeful. An artist doesn't have to have one type of style to convey what it is they seek to convey. This over-stylizing of drawing places some artists in a box. There's no need for the box.
