My only concern about gay marriage is that it creates discrimination. Before I get flammed, and there is talk about civil rights, I do not accept that civil rights and gay marriage are equal. Every american citizen has rights, those rights were DENIED minorities. The GLBT community never had that right, so their "rights" are not being denied.

I personally do not believe in gay marriage and would not vote for it, but I will not protest it and will actually accept it if it is law. Back to how gay marriage creates discrimination... Why is Polygamy taboo? Why is this not legal, there are religious grounds and cultural grounds present across the world. Why are straight and gays better than polygamist.

By opening up this avenue, you open up the floodgates. As far as im concerned this issue is equal to why Home Owners recieve interest payment deductions while renters get squat.

In conclusion, i can only be fine with gay marriage if we also allow everything else under the sun that does not cause harm or involve minors.

KCinDC asks: "Have there been any polls of DC residents about same-sex marriage? Is there any actual evidence that blacks in DC are overwhelmingly opposed?"

There have been private polls a while back, where the results were not made public. I suspect that the results did not look good for the gay community. At what point the adjective 'overwhelmingly' applies I cannot say.

But the situation on same-sex marriage is very fluid nationwide, and perhaps in DC. One recent poll showed a 9 percent increase in support for same-sex marriage IN THE LAST MONTH! Any DC specific poll data you can find is probably out of date already.

All the homophobes & closeted gay Republicans will be grandstanding for the folks at home. I say we out the bastards, & I hope Larry Flynt & the Advocate publish some "private facts" about these public figure-hypocrites.

Tom, Congress has the constitutional right to do all sorts of things. That doesn't mean they can't be criticized for choosing to undertake particular allowed actions. They certainly aren't *required* to intervene, and they ought not to.

Have there been any polls of DC residents about same-sex marriage? Is there any actual evidence that blacks in DC are overwhelmingly opposed? It seems to me there's too much stereotyping going on with very little basis. And when it comes to DC laws, I don't care about the opinions of people who live in the suburbs but come into DC to go to church.

Tom, I simply don't accept the notion that Congress should intervene in LOCAL matters. Can they? Sure. Should they? Absolutely not. It goes against most of what we hold sacred in this country. But then again, these are politicians we're talking about. Principle is out the window.

Although I cannot stand when Congress intervene's in DC matters, I do understand that it is the law that they oversee the District. So until the law is changed or we are granted statehood, I accept congressional meddling painfully
