@ Biker DJ: Most "free" student papers have a disclaimer inside the front cover or at the top of the masthead that informs readers that the first copy is free, and it's $TK for additional copies. It's then up to the publisher to enforce the policy (clearly you're not going to go after a professor for getting enough for his class, but you might if the professor hid them in his office, etc., etc.)

If the Tower doesn't have this policy, it should insert it immediately, especially when there are intelligent people out there defending theft.

Oh Amanda, I'm so sorry that you can't discern the difference between what the newspaper trashers did, and your little example. Let me help you out. While the Halloween candy I give you is indeed free, and you are free to dispose of it however you see fit, your throwing the wrappers across my lawn constitutes littering, which, alas, is a crime. Those who trashed the newspapers were considerate enough to dispose of them properly in waste containers and recycle bins (if the video is accurate).

Please recycle The Tower.

I can't wait to take all Biker DJ's candy on Halloween, unwrap it, and throw it across his yard. Yeah, free candy!

Which is the larger waste of paper, publishing intolerant views, or trashing the copies of those intoleraant views. I would wish that both the homophobes who wrote the intolerant views and the homos who trashed the papers would find more constructive causes and means, and both learn to respect each others' views and perspectives.

And as for Ms. Austin's and Mr. Garbarino's contention that there is a crime of theft here, sorry, but there's not. Your papers are either free or they are not. Once you place them out for free distribution, you have no say in how many copies one may take, or how those who take the copies choose to dispose of them.

J: You kidding? Of course I'll stand up for this. It's stealing. Free papers aren't free to trash. They are free to read.

Thank you Amy Austin for quoting and standing up for this. What a waste of paper. I hope this person gets caught and kicked out of school.
