In Theaters This Week: Confessions of a Shopaholic, The International, Friday the 13th, Donkey Punch
Three half-steps forward, one giant leap back:
Confessions of a Shopaholic asks you to sympathize with an adorable little journalist/compulsive liar (Isla Fisher) because she just can't stop shopping! Isn't it cute how she jeopardizes a job interview in order to buy an expensive scarf, spreading the cost over a dozen credit cards?
The International asks you to not think too hard about the plot involving a so-evil-it-nearly-cackles bank and instead just enjoy looking at Clive Owen, Naomi Watts, and a gun-ravaged Guggenheim.
Friday the 13th asks you to "reimagine" that there haven't been a billion of these movies before. (Though the epic prologue, I must say, is pretty kickass.)
And Donkey Punch asks you to excuse its vile setup and appreciate its decent execution — no pun intended — as freshman English director Olly Blackburn puts a Funny Games spin on the drunk-horny-kids slasher flick.
On a related note, I'll be posting an interview with Blackburn shortly.
