Wild ‘n’ Crazy Steve Martin Now Just Crazy

According to IMDb News, Steve Martin requested a script rewrite for his upcoming Pink Panther sequel.

(Didn't know one was in the works? I'd forgotten, too. Just a guess, but maybe the dragged-out production wasn't much talked about because of the WTF? factor of adding a sequel to a bomb.)

But anyway, Martin, who's always earned my mad love whether playing The Jerk, writing books, or hosting the Oscars, reportedly asked for a wedding to be written into The Pink Panther 2.

Because, he said, "every movie I've done that ends in a wedding or holding a baby has been a hit."

I'll tell you if it works, likely with a tiny tear running down my cheek, in the Feb. 6 issue.

Steve Martin is a national treasure for his role as Lucky Day in The Three Amigos.

I believe I've made this argument before on this blog in response to a Jason Cherkis item a while back. Still true!

I've held for a while now that we should refer to his oeuvre as the "works of Martin."

I once saw a profile of Steve Martin on Comedy Central in which they were interviewing John Cleese, apparently a friend of Martin's. They asked him why Martin, an avid art collector, frequently agrees to star in movies that are obvious dreck. (Pink Panther, Bowfinger, Bringing Down The House, et. al.) Cleese paused for just a moment and said "Well, works of art are very expensive."

    Bowfinger was funny!

Bowfinger? Ugh. There's $8 I'll never get back.
