Oscar Nominations, Cont.

Let's see, where did I leave off nearly 12 hours ago?

Actually, I don't have a whole lot more to say:

8) I'm flabbergasted that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received 13 (!) nominations, while the superior and far more engaging Gran Torino got nothing.

9) I think Milk and Slumdog Millionaire are the only films that belong in the Best Picture category.

10) I love me some Amy Adams, but she could have nailed her minor Doubt performance while drunk on the blood of Christ.

So it looks like the Feb. 22 telecast will be another long night of predictable winners and people who shouldn't be there.

Speaking of which, I don't know how I missed this announcement, but: Hugh Jackman as host? Really?

I'm not saying we need to go back to the days of Billy Crystal — or, shudder, Whoopi Goldberg — but the Oscars require navigation by someone who can quickly take the wind out of its sails. (Hey, my metaphors match.) Pretty dresses — and faces, nothing against you, Hugh — aren't quite enough.

But don't think I'll miss one second of it anyway.

Jeepers, the Oscars are nothing but an awards show. An overhyped, in-joke-ridden awards show that has grown quite tired over the years. Mr. Jackman is a highly-experienced performer and extremely gifted master of ceremonies of both gala events and awards ceremonies; he even earned an Emmy for his hosting. Anyone fortunate enough to have attended the Tony Awards (aka the classiest awards show ever) during the three years he hosted can attest to the fact that this man knows how to keep a large audience happy and entertained through a long evening. He will be a much-needed breath of fresh air for the Oscarcast and might even be able to restore a little old-school class to the proceedings.

I trust that you're right about that. I read that he's hosted other ceremonies but haven't seen them myself, so I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

At any rate, it'd be difficult to spoil the Oscars for me...it's pretty much my Christmas.

Right there with you, Tricia. Except I still think Billy Crystal's big opening numbers make all the others pale. A good amount of head-scratching this year... but so excited for "Frozen River" on screenplay and best actress. I saw that based on your review and thought you nailed it.
