Unfortunately Mary Landrieu is privatizing DC's public properties for us.

The charters are allowed first right on the public school properties, unfortunately (thanks to Landrieu, who has privatized New Orleans' public school system). Then the charter corporation can simply close the school, turn around and sell the building at a huge profit. Losers - DC residents and government. It's practically a scam. Something should be done about.

But really, the public schools should remain public and not be sold at all.

ML- Yet many of the earmarks were given to entities that have very passionate (and broad) constituencies.

EG- Charters are and will be given a crack at the schools, but lame proposals should (and are), of course, bounced back.

Big "duh!" on the editorial arguing to use school buildings that DCPS could not fill over to charter schools. The kids needs their educatin' and they prefer to do it indoors, so you can't just close school buildings and turn them into luxury condos.

Nonprofit pork? Will Mr. Catania support halting those poisonous Council earmarks? As I recall, about a third of the millions the council granted last year were not even slated for legally-registered nonprofits.
