Today’s Best Headline: “Kidman Blasted Over Didgeridoo Stunt”

The story itself is pretty entertaining, too. From IMDb's WENN feed:

Nicole Kidman has enraged Aboriginal leaders in her native Australia by breaking a centuries-old taboo against women playing the didgeridoo.

The actress was seen blowing into the wooden instrument on a German TV chatshow last Saturday.

And several cultural leaders have now criticised her for the stunt, because tradition dictates that only men should play the didgeridoo.

One critic has even suggested Kidman's fertility could be at risk after she broke the ancient rule.

Aboriginal actor and language teacher Richard Green says, "People are going to see Nicole playing it and think it's all right. It bastardises our culture. I will guarantee she has no more children. It is not meant to be played by women as it will make them barren."

And Alan Madden, a cultural officer at Sydney's Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, adds: "I presume she doesn't know."

And I presume she has more sense than to believe that blowing a fucking didgeridoo is going to shrivel up her ovaries, but what do I know. Ladies, consider yourselves warned.

This is just one more example of an ignorant white person offending people of color by breaking taboos.

  • Jim

I hope that's in jest, gonzales.

And I hope the real outcome of this is that more women pick up a didgeridoo.

Respecting another's culture shouldn't include respecting their misogyny. Not all traditions, cultural or otherwise, are worthy of respect.

So - white people's culture deserves respect. The culture of people of color deserves no respect. Yes, Jed & Jim, we know what you mean. We know racists & we know cultural imperialists, & we know how to recognize them.
For example, "ownership" of land: In many, if not most, cultures, a person cannot "own" land. But white people say a person can "own" land.
So if we people of color do not respect your culture & nationalize all land "ownership", I'm sure you'll understand. White people are on a downward trajectory, & this financial meltdown is only the latest sign. In ten or twenty years when the white people's hegemony is eclipsed, all the rules the white people forced on the world will change.
Good luck in the future, Jed & Jim. I'm sure you'll better understand the culture of people of color in the near future.

I am one of your vaunted "people of color." As such, I feel justified in saying you should loosen the straps on your tinfoil hat.

  • Jim

And just so I'm clear on this, al, you are saying women should not be able to play this instrument, correct?
