Another Petworth Shooting: Illinois and Decatur, NW
A few minutes after 11 p.m. tonight, a young woman was shot in the 700 block of Decatur Street, NW.
The victim sustained injuries to her left arm and is not in in critical condition, police say. She is seventeen years old.
Police tape also demarcated a house at the intersection of 7th and Emerson Streets to which the victim fled after being attacked.
By the time we arrived, an ambulance was on the scene. By the time we left, cops were pulling down yellow tape on Emerson while their colleagues three blocks south scoured the ground for overlooked shells.
The shots I could hear from my porch nearly a mile away.
We'll do our best to keep you in the loop.

Thanks for tracking this. Don't stop!

This is incredibly scary. My wife and I awoke to hear the shots at 11:03pm. There were 15-20 in succession and assumed by the number that it could not have been shots, but M-80s or some sort of fireworks. I cannot believe that the victim is alive. The scene is less than one block from our house so in addition to the recent wave, this is extremely unnerving. Hope that this and the recent brief by the chief to the neighboorhood result in an effective and more creative police presence.

The fireworks have desensitized us to sounds of gunshots. I wonder if someone were shot outside our homes would we shrug it off as just another firework being set off?
Doesn't it seem like violent crimes in our neighborhood are going up in the past few months. Or I am paranoid?

I wonder if someone got shot in front of muriel bowser's home, or fenty's home what their response would be. Lanier, Fenty, and Bowser need to get the message that the crime in Ward 4 is unacceptable, and 4D needs to get their act together!

Does anyone know the circumstances of the shooting. We literally were in the house two minutes after taking the dog out when we heard shooting outside. This is crazy. I can think of at least four shootings within a few blocks in as many weeks. Where are our public officials on this?

C. Parker ~ I hear you on the M-80 thing. Didn't sound like handguns. We're hearing now a rifle may have been involved, and will update you on that & more ASAP.

I would be shocked if it was a rifle as the shots were in rapid succession. I have found lately that we've become de-sensitized to the fireworks, but when it is shots, even if it sounds like fireworks, somehow we know and it sends a chill. Even when we've questioned, or doubted that it was shots (hoped it was not), we knew that it was and turned out to be true, like in this case.
I am disappointed that I was unable to attend the brief by the Chief, but everything that I have seen on the news discussed the police presence and closing cases- (there have been 16 homocides in Ward 4 this year and only two remain open) but how about this: PREVENTION. Wouldn't a proactive approach save time and resources and THE NUMBER OF HOMICIDES IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD? I have heard little/nothing about this in the police strategy.
