Peter Nickles: Counting the Votes

So here's how the votes are looking for tomorrow's showdown on Peter Nickles' nomination as attorney general:

Solid Yes (to confirm)
At-Large Councilmember David A. Catania
Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham
Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans
Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser
Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells

Solid No
At-Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson
Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh
Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander

Undecided
Chairman Vincent C. Gray—but Alexander's no is probably a bellwether
At-Large Councilmember Carol Schwartz—will Carol thank Hizzoner for his political assistance, or will she go out with a bang?
At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown—who knows, but probably would vote yes under the right conditions
Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr.—tells LL he's undecided
Ward 8 Councilmember Marion Barry—probably a no, but this is a man steeped in the art of the deal

So, in sum, there's a lot of undecided voters predisposed to giving the mayor a hard time here. But in the face of what will be a furious lobbying effort, as one Wilson Building wag puts it, "Nixon could go to China at midnight tonight."

UPDATE, 6:40 P.M.: Mayoral statement! "The Administration is unequivocally confident in Peter Nickles’ ability and commitment to greatly serve the residents of the District of Columbia as the city’s attorney general. While we respect the council’s process, we look forward to a swift approval resolution." Long night for JoAnne Ginsburg.
