Palin Talks Science, Fails
In her policy speech yesterday, her first, Palin and Palin's people based it on her one talking point not yet deemed a "lie" or "false"--motherhood. She tries to drop some science on fruit-fly research. She deems fruit-fly research a joke. One of those wasteful earmarks.
Science bites back. Science doesn't like Sarah. At all:
"This idiot woman, this blind, shortsighted ignoramus, this pretentious clod, mocks basic research and the international research community. You damn well better believe that there is research going on in animal models — what does she expect, that scientists should mutagenize human mothers and chop up baby brains for this work? — and countries like France and Germany and England and Canada and China and India and others are all respected participants in these efforts.
Yes, scientists work on fruit flies. Some of the most powerful tools in genetics and molecular biology are available in fruit flies, and these are animals that are particularly amenable to experimentation."
Last night, on Countdown, a Newsweek reporter who usually can be counted on to spout dull Conventional Wisdom declared that Sarah Palin's quip that fruit fly research is a joke may in fact be the Dumbest Thing Sarah Palin Has Ever Said.

The French fruit fly research she ridiculed concerns the Olive fruit fly Bactrocera oleae, not Drosophila sp.
Nevertheless since the two species are close, the results of the French research may well lead to advances in understanding Drosophila and may bring similar medical advances.
To say nothing of the damage she has done to the public perception of fruit fly research in general.

Alaska pipeline-oops,sorry,may never be built,cronyism,poor bidding process ,overpaid
Raised taxes on oil companies-they passed that on to consumers,including her constituents
Hacked a colleagues email account-yep,thats how she brought down that guy on the oil and gas board.
Cut government spending-so she could spend more on herself and family
Exactly what are these great accomplishments she is supposed to have ? The ones she gives herself credit for ? Name one that further research has not found to be a miscarriage.

to Representative Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) for $211,509 in olive fruit fly research in Paris, France.
Those were the fruit flies that Palin was referring to in her autism speech. The fruit fly remark had nothing at all to do with medical research or autism. So if your going to say that she is anti-science, best try someting new.

The two species aren't close - they're not even in the same family, for chrissake. Absolutely no one uses Bactrocera oleae for genetic studies.
And how is this porkbarrel spending for an agriculture project - which consists primarily of irradiating millions of the little bastards [flies] and dumping them from airplanes in the hopes that they'll unsuccessfully mate - supposed to yield fantastic advances in medicine, exactly?

Oh, I doubt that. It would be hard to beat her schtick about how she and McCain will get government out of the way of the private sector by increasing regulation and oversight.

Ah, someone has taken up the mantle of the fallen William Proxmire. I see you repeat Palin's error that the olive fly research was to be in Paris, rather than Montpellier. Is Paris the only city in France she has heard of? Are we supposed to think that she knew what the research was about? If you were going to search for natural predators of an agricultural pest which recently made its way to California, would you look somewhere other than in its pre-existing range? (Maybe you would, in which case I am glad you are not the person responsible for the research.)
