Ignore Financial Crisis, Eat Chocolate

While researching an article I’m writing for our upcoming Food Issue (Nov. 6. Start salivating!) I had an excuse to visit Biagio Fine Chocolate, which opened two years ago at 1904 18th St. NW (the old basement digs of Sticky Fingers Bakery). First of all, the owner, Biagio Abbatiello, is a lovely man who knows his chocolate but will not make you feel like a dolt if you don’t. In fact, he seemed not at all offended when I likened one sample of a lemon-pepper white chocolate bar to Pledge.

Pledge references aside, there are some amazing chocolates in there, especially the ganache truffles from J. Chocolatier of Capitol Hill. Jane Morris, who is the J. of J. Chocolatier and, I have to assume, a genius, will be at Biagio tonight introducing her “fall collection.” I’ve no idea if anything in that collection will rival the green tea chocolate I tried yesterday—which was nothing at all like furniture wax—but if you can’t buy, you can at least sample. She’ll be at the store from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
