Palin Ignites Hate Speech At Rally
Wow. Dana Milbank reports some scary stuff at a Palin campaign event in Florida:
“Palin’s routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric’s questions for her “less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media.” At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, ‘Sit down, boy.’”
What worries me is that there is still a month left before the election. This moment will probably not be the low point for either campaign.

Jeez, I’m really worried, too: worried that this will be at the top of the blog for an hour.

@Andrew Beaujon - are you saying that it doesn’t concern you that McCain-Palin’s attacks are inciting people to shout racial epithets and that someone should kill Barack Obama?

He’s probably worried that this will lead to another post about owls.

Moderates, including life-long Republicans in Florida are worried, and have been at the racist and anti-gay hate-mongering Palin is generating.
We saw nothing like this during the 2004 campaign, with Swift Boat attacks on John Kerry’s character seeming tame in comparison.
Even some Christian fundamentalists, who are drawn to the McCain-Palin pro-life platform, are cringing, and are afraid of this extremely violent approach to politics, and are again planning to sit out this election.
Moderate Republicans (except for racists) are mostly joining Susan Eisenhower in her support for Obama. They want calm, educated leadership in the U.S. during this time of economic crisis. Race-baiting is not what we need now, although Palin is drawing the curtain away from an ugly side of the U.S.
Now we can see the continued legacies of American history of lynchings, KKK domesic terrorism, and slavery. It’s unpatriotic to stoke the attitudes that created these inhuman and anti-democratic practices.
But Palin was associated with an Alaskan separatist movement as well as a church that advocated religious infiltration into politcs.
This is the worst side of American culture, and I’m a pro-life conservative who has tutored teens in crisis pregnancies. Don’t we want to bring children into a society that respects life and all people, regardless of skin color?
As a supporter of a consistent ethic of life, I believe we must work to create a culture of civility and respect for all people, so children don’t grow up, wishing they hadn’t been born, because of being wounded by racist attitudes and lack of opportunity because of racial discimination.
Thank you for this revealing blog.

The ramping up of hate speech at McCain/Palin rallies is frightening to me. I have seen mobs in action. I watched my dad face down Klan riders, when I was 9 years old. I am now 61. This must be denounced, by us all, no matter our color, our ethnic background, our religious beliefs, or non-beliefs, or political party.

Palin, with her glittering eyes and teeth and smile, while she throws red meat at the crowd, evangilizing to ratchet up emotions…distorting what she knows to be the truth…evidently, like global warming, she thinks this is all just ‘part of the plan’ of the end of days, the Rapture!!! She loves the adrenelin of the Kill…her fangs streaming…
That she actually has the podium..at this pivotal time in history… is like a very bad Sci Fi movie…the brainwashed reading stone tablets that make no sense (literal interpretations of the bible), and groveling at those with working frontal lobes with clubs…God help us, Help ourselves!
