Are Juvies Ruining Gallery Place?
That's what the Examiner is reporting.
According to the quasi-daily, the Gallery Place Metro stop has been so overrun with kids that station employees have taken to calling it "7th and Hell."
That's kinda catchy.
But the real scoop here is this: According to the Examiner, employees at the Fuddruckers at 7th and H have "resorted to locking the restaurant's doors during business hours to keep out the crush of kids who have no intention of buying food."
A store manager is quoted saying that youngsters have turned the place into "pandemonium."
Understandable, I guess. But as a guy who scouts out all possible fire-escape options whenever alighting on a new public place, I gotta raise a stink about this door-locking thing: Doesn't that violate the fire code?

Didn't you ever sneak out of school through a side door? That is, it's possible to lock a door in only one direction: Dudes can get out, but not back in.

Try seeing a movie on friday or saturday or being anywhere near that area after school lets out - its is complete chaos. Its turned into such a mess that I know plenty of people that avoid it like the plague. the fights, cursing, loitering- its embarrassing. DC really needs to look into fixing the situation somehow.
And its not locking people into the restaurant- it sounds like its just locking them out. Which would mean no fire code violation, I think.

I've been to Gallery Place recently and witnessed the chaos... I still think, however it's nothing compared to the Downtown Silver Spring scene on a Friday or Saturday. I avoid it at all costs!

Chinatown is overrun by teenage thugs & miscreants. The DC police do nothing.
This situation has been true for years, & apparently always will be true. 7th & Hell is a good description.

It makes you wonder if the parents know where their kids are after school. I read about something like this months ago. The problems here are the lack of enforcement and the pack mentality that too many youths embraced these days. If parents spent time teaching about the consequences of their actions and less time having TV, Radio or the internet babysit their kids, we wouldn't be talking about this problem.

The easiest way to solve this would be for the Council to lower the curfew to 10:00 and to start rounding up kids wholesale and ticketing if needed. Same goes for Adams Morgan. All MPD needs is flexcuffs and a bus or two to haul them all out of there and they'll be all set.
