Thank you! I was trying to figure out why I found Palin's constant use of this word so irritating. You just don't get to call yourself a maverick.

What's amazing to me is that the term maverick is used to describe someone who bucks their party's orthodoxy. And yet, at the RNC, the delegates were eating it up as McCain was referring to himself as a maverick. I was really astonished by this. Don't they realize that when McCain was calling himself a maverick, he was essentially saying that he disagrees with their extreme conservatism? (Whether or not he actually does disagree is another story entirely.) Why would they cheer this? Why are they so excited that their party's nominee constantly touts his disobedience to them? I don't get it.
