Creative Loafing Inc., the owner of Washington City Paper, announced this morning that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In a conference call with top company officials, Ben Eason, the company's CEO, said that the step would allow the six papers in the Creative Loafing portfolio to establish a greater online presence while the [...]

Did McCain Campaign Register www.voteforthemilf.com?

GovGap published a story last night revealing that www.voteforthemilf.com, www.voteforthemilf.net, and www.voteforthemilf.org all direct users to John McCain's campaign website. First time redirects from a given ip address are greeted by a video of Sarah Palin–not the campaign home page. Second and all subsequent redirects are taken to the McCain-Palin campaign home page.

Weekend in Review

*I think we won't soon hear the end of all this. It's enough to make me want to skip town for the week.
*This'll explain why Henry Paulson had such a nice weekend.
*OK, so the post is a week old, but it so embodies the humanity of the young professional class in the District. [...]

Cynical Clinton Thought of the Day

Yet another story detailing Bill Clinton's preference for talking up John McCain over campaigning for Barack Obama:
Former President Bill Clinton was hesitant to characterize Barack Obama as a "great man" Sunday, a phrase he had no qualms using last week to describe Obama's rival John McCain.
Clinton told NBC's Tom Brokaw that it was only earlier [...]

D.C. Therapy

D.C. now has its own apartment therapy page. AT DC, which caters to hipsters looking for advice on where to buy Chip Cheery Food Storage Containers or how to sound proof a U street rental beset by a restaurant karaoke night came into being about two weeks ago.

Rachel Grad, one of three District residents hired [...]

Judge Gets Records Sealed on His Own Case

There are certain privileges that come with being a judge on the D.C. Superior Court. You get a parking space, a courtroom, a law clerk and a secretary, upwards of $150,000 a year, and the job security of a 15-year presidential appointment. But it's still a job for mortals. Judges have to pay for their [...]

It’s Official: Nats Park Worst Attended New MLB Stadium Since Humpdome

The numbers are in: Nationals Park is the worst-attended new ballpark since the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome opened in Minneapolis in 1982.
Ballpark FAIL!
OK, yes, the final game was rained out, meaning the total paid draw of 2,320,400 is based on only 81 games rather than the scheduled 82. Still, no asterisk is necessary on this [...]

Future McCain Won Tonight’s Debate!

According to Radley Balko, the McCain camp aired the above ad an hour or so before McCain told the press that he would be participating in tonight's debate, which leads one to believe that the McCain team knew there was a chance that his "Campaign to Suspend My Campaign" campaign wasn't going to work.
What a [...]

An Adams Morgan Rat Tale, Part I

Like all of those scantily-clad, cocktail-loving kids from the suburbs, rats enjoy fun times in Adams Morgan. Talk of their antics burbles up every few months or so on the neighborhood listserv, as it did recently, when Sid Binks chimed in with a post titled, "RATS Everywhere."
Binks, 44, has lived in Adams Morgan almost half [...]

Will Third Time Be a Charm for Lottery Contract?

Last week, for the third time, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty submitted the city lottery contract to the D.C. Council for approval. They have so far refused to take a vote on the matter.
Fenty is showing no signs of backing down.
The latest feint: On Wednesday morning, at a breakfast meeting between Fenty and councilmembers, Attorney-General-in-Waiting Peter [...]

So, an I-Bank Walks into a Bar…

The U.S. is (possibly? maybe? mos def?) straddling the cusp of an economic crisis, and what do our politicians do? Stage a vainglorious meeting of the anti-Mensa:
Both McCain and his Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama, would leave the White House without comment, and the meeting was described as among the wildest in memory. A beleaguered [...]

Downie Registers, But Won’t Vote–Yet

A couple of weeks ago, FishbowlDC broke the news that Leonard Downie Jr., the recently departed executive editor of the Washington Post, had registered to vote after a prolonged absence from the rolls. As the paper's top editor, Downie had declined to cast ballots because the very act would force him to decide who'd best [...]

Want to Wear a McCain-Palin Button to the Polls? Better Live in Maryland

WUSA has an article on its Web site addressing e-mailed rumors that you can't wear campaign paraphernalia to the polls on election day. The rules actually differ depending on where you live in the DMV: Virginians can't wear anything with a candidate's name on it to the polls; voters in Maryland can, though poll workers [...]

Update: SIX Flagging

Dan Snyder's belly-uppish theme park chain, Six Flags, took yet another fiscal knee to the naughties from Wall Street analysts.
As the markets closed on Tuesday, Moody's Investment Service pushed Six Flags' debt rating "deeper into junk status" because of "concerns about a potential future default," says a Forbes' report.
Snyder's company is more than $2.2 billion [...]

Officials Mum on Wiggins Firing; Nickles Promises Answers Will Come in Private Session

No answers yet in the Wilson Building whodunit of the hour: Why was Grayce Wiggins fired?
Wiggins is the rent administrator axed in August, months after a pro-tenant ruling regarding the Kennedy-Warren building in Cleveland Park aroused the ire of local landlords, developers, and lawyers. Tenant advocates have cried foul play ever since the firing.
Yesterday, a [...]
