Birds everywhere where flying to and from with hunks of glazed doughnuts in their beaks. Squirrels scampered off with sticky bits of dough in their jaws. How could this happen? Is Krispy Kreme dumping their unwanted goods in the middle of Dupont Circle?

Have you ever been poor?
I know you both mean well, & have good intentions, but poor people need food & like food, almost any food [except for the peanut butter that you have to stir, i.e., the healthful stuff], & poor people need clothes.
Any old jacket is better than no jacket. Clothing that should be put in a dumpster is recycled as rags by most organizations.
If poor people ate only gourmet foods & wore only Armani, well - they wouldn't be poor.

Jule has a point Al. It makes sense for the same reason I'm against donating clothes we intend to throw away. Who are we to think that clothes that are meant for the dumpster are clothes good enough for poor people.

Obviously Jule Banville has never been hungry. Doughnuts are food, after all. & why should poor people be banned from eating doughnuts?

Similarly, my husband used to witness a hot dog vendor regularly dump all his unused hot dog buns in that grassy area where the Dupont Farmer's Market takes place every Sunday. The truly nasty part was the pack of rats that gorged themselves silly on all those buns. And we wonder why we have such rodent problems in this city. Yuck.

Well, in KK's defense, do we really want them, as a point of charity, to feed the poor and hungry gooey, stale, fat-laden, HFCS-infused old doughnuts? Do our indigent not deserve better?

Good question. It must be a corporate policy, because I thought that hotels and such could donate extra unserved food to the DC Central Kitchen. Why not the doughnuts too?

So tell us, Krispy Kreme corporate types: why is the store prohibited from donating unsold doughnuts at the end of the day?
