Principals Selected for All DCPS Schools
On Aug. 25, D.C. Public Schools will kick off another school year. As has previously been reported many, many times, Chancellor Michelle Rhee fired 24 principals, and later 22 assistant principals in two distinct waves this Spring. (I must admit, I don't know the total numbers of administrators let go over the course of the year.) Now, today, twelve days before classes start, comes news that principals have been chosen for all of the systems 121 schools. Forty six people are new hires. Roughly 700 applicants, up from 200, were considered. The press release and a full list of principals is after the jump:
DCPS School Leadership
on Track for ‘08-‘09 School Year
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) officials announced that 100 percent of its 121 schools have principals in place for the upcoming school year.
Last fall, DCPS kicked off an aggressive national campaign aimed at recruiting top candidates from across the country. Come Aug. 25, the first day of the 2008-09 school year, 46 new leaders will guide DCPS students through an exciting academic year focused on student achievement.
“Attracting top talent has always been a priority of this administration, and this is another step in the right direction,” said Mayor Adrian Fenty. “Education reform begins and ends in the classroom.”
As a result of the recruitment campaign, approximately 700 candidates applied for positions, a significant increase from 200 applicants last year.
This year’s applicant pool includes a diverse group of candidates. Twenty-five percent of the applicants are from outside the region; 58 percent have come to DCPS from neighboring school districts, while 17 percent were internal candidates.
Each new principal underwent a rigorous hiring process that included an extensive screening and four interviews, one of which was conducted personally by Chancellor Michelle Rhee and another by the school community.
“Recruiting and retaining high-quality, energetic principals is a key component of reform,” said Chancellor Rhee. “At the end of the day, strong leadership is imperative at the school level. Parents, teachers and students are counting on the district to deliver a top-notch education to our kids, and quality principals are essential.”
This week, all DCPS principals began a two-day Principals Institute designed to provide professional development and additional support leading into the first day of school.
