"...the leadership needed in this city requires vision that sometimes transcends neighborhoods?"

That's why Fenty was elected mayor--over the active opposition of Evans--in 2006.

If Jack wants to be Mayor, At-Large Council member or Council Chair then he should run for one of those positions.

Truly Orwellian, that Jack Evans is attacked for being pro development and criticized in the debate for supporting the Verizon Center and the Nationals. As if turning dormant, depressed neighborhoods into vibrant areas of residential and commercial activity is a bad thing. Isn't it about time for the self-described "activists" to grow up and recognize that the leadership needed in this city requires vision that sometimes transcends neighborhoods?

"The question is whether or not parochialism favoring neighborhoods (Silverman) is better than parochialism favoring developers (Evans)?" --Richard Layman

Au contraire. Mr. Evans, as the elected Ward 2 Councilman, is paid with DC taxpayer funds to be quite parochial for his Ward 2 constituents. He was not elected an At-Large Councilmember or Deputy Mayor of Economic Development, or Mayor.

"This campaign, however, isn’t much about the issues, so much as it is that some people don’t like Jack Evans." --Mike DeBonis

And, au contraire to you, too! While the Dupont Circle "debate" may not have been about the "issues," this election will surely be.

When are you folks actually going to get off your duffs and do some legitimate investigative journalism about Evans' so-called "experience" in the finance area over the last 17 years?

What's been the ROI (Return on Investment) for the taxpayers for all of Jack's favors, outright giveaways and tax abatements to his cronies and his self-dealing? In addition to the stadium, the Convention Center, the Corcoran, the Manadarin Hotel, the City Museum, and his JackPAC scandal, come to mind immediately.

While I don't dislike Jack, and I regret that his kids lost their mother at such a young age, that is no reason to punish the rest of us in Ward 2 with another four years of poor stewardship.

Mike:

1. Thank you for this week's feature on the contracting issue. Dirty is as dirty does. Regardless of which (new) people do the scratching.

2. WRT the race between Silverman and Evans, this may well be another version of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Parochialism is parochialism.

The question is whether or not parochialism favoring neighborhoods (Silverman) is better than parochialism favoring developers (Evans)?

Until we can develop a greater sensitivity towards broader issues that cross the artificial borders of wards, and a sense for what makes a city great (starting with the kinds of things discussed in tomes such as _Creating a Vibrant City Center_ or even _Community Economic Development Handbook_) DC will never be the kind of "world class" city that everyone seems to believe that it is already.

Maybe both candidates are equally bad although one could argue that favoring neighborhoods and citizens over developers is a good thing. I do think it can go too far as well. (Many of my activist colleagues favor Silverman...)

But regarding parking and driving, just pay attention to the roads at most times of the day--in the core of the city, there isn't that much traffic, except for very specific streets such as NY Ave., K Street, I Street, etc.

Remember that we have to apply urban thinking to the city, always, both with built environment questions as well as with transportation and mobility concerns.

Mike: Thanks for attending and covering the event, however the debate was not offered just by our organization, but rather by both the Dupont Circle ANC (2B) and DCCA. Commissioners Hewitt and Stephens of ANC2B did a majority of the work, we publicized it heavily, and I wanted to ensure full and fair credit was provided to ANC2B. Thx again for covering.

It certainly does follow the regulation, I hung the Cary signs.

I found it hilarious that Evans also accused Cary of ripping down his signs. Ive had my yard sign mysteriously disappear twice along with several neighbors on my block. Likewise in Dupont, my mom is on her 3rd Cary sign.

Evans should be fined for his excess signage but he knows it wont happen. There is NO enforcement.

Anyone who lives anywhere near Ward 2 knows that Evans has 12/15 signs on every corner of every street. The intersection in question that Evans pointed out does follow the 3-per side per block regulation.

Can I get an Amen for noting how pathetically bad Bill Myers is when he's on the Kojo show? He's a pompous arse who's snotty style of questioning seems to embarrass Kojo.
