Just to clarify, I think you only get the alert emails if you sign up for them at this website (http://www.umdps.umd.edu/). I think they can also send messages to your cell phones. Basically, if you sign up there you'll get alert emails or text messages.

I bet it's a realesed exotic of some kind or a bobcat. There were cougar sightings in Vienna, VA in 1999 I think. My friends lived in the area near the sightings and said that there were definately wild bobcat around but most certainly not cougar. In fact I am fairly certain that there are only a handful of confirmed sightings of cougars east of the mississippi in the past 50+ years. However they are moving east, I think a solo male was killed just outside of Chicago sometime recently. But he came from Minnesota or the Dakotas, so I doubt they could make it to maryland undetected.
