Also: I believe "asshat" gets its sting by referring to the male ass, particularly the unkempt kind.

someone recently challenged me to call my boyfriend "asshat" as a nickname. he's been a real sport about it.

Well, if he's cooperating, then he's obviously not a true asshat. Unless you're douchey, in which case he's possibly cooperating only to reaffirm your douchiness. And if that's true, then he's potentially an asshat.
I don't know all of the protocols.
