Someone Who Reads City Paper Hates Diane Rehm
We’re used to getting haters who write to us, but usually it’s because they hate us. Today we got one from someone who hates Diane Rehm. Well, we like mail, even unsigned anonymous mail, no matter what, so keep ‘em coming. But, in the interest of full disclosure, I met Diane Rehm during a stint as a producer at WAMU and she is a lovely woman with fantastic hair… who happens to suffer from spasmodic dysphonia, a neurological condition affecting her vocal chords. Still, thanks for caring enough to buy a stamp!

I too met Diane while working at WAMU. I saw both sides. If you were of the same opinion as her, you were fine, if you weren’t, you were the enemy. She was the one who pushed for the hire of the former WAMU General Manager who was later ousted in a messy episode. But, either way making fun of her condition isn’t cool.

I happen to think Diane Rehm is brilliant and she’s one of my role models. It makes me sad for our society that someone would send you something so pathetic.

I too have SD and we understand that some people are ignorant of the condition and also the effort that it takes to communicate. Diane Rehm is a perfect example of someone who perseveres in the face of adversity. I think perhaps there is something to be learned from her in that regard. There are people who get hung up on the voice disorder much like people don’t understand people with foreign accents. Hopefully that person will be able to overcome their own disability and be more accepting.
