More on Clampitt’s Exit

LL has obtained a copy of the press release to be issued after At-Large Candidate Adam Clampitt announces that he’s shuttering his campaign today and endorsing Michael A. Brown.

Clampitt is billing it as a “veritable merger of the former rival campaigns,” with three members of Clampitt’s staff now working for Brown, including campaign manager Jarvis Houston. “Other resources formerly under Clampitt’s control will now be at Brown’s disposal as he continues his election bid and adopts portions of Clampitt’s platform,” the release reads.

And there’s this statement from Clampitt: “Michael Brown and I see to eye to eye on many issues, and this made my decision to support him easier.” said Clampitt. “Those who are familiar with my campaign know that advocating for a more business friendly climate in the District, innovating policing and crime fighting initiatives, fighting for full marriage equality and enacting term limits for elected officials are my most important issues.”

Clampitt Ends Candidacy, Endorses Brown
Unites Independents

Washington, DC — July 14, 2008 — Today Adam Clampitt, Independent, suspended his candidacy for a DC Council - at Large seat and is endorsing fellow Independent Michael Brown. The cessation of Clampitt’s active campaigning is to be followed with a veritable merger of the former rival campaigns.

“The support my campaign has received from friends and supporters in the community have been extraordinary. We could not have asked for a better start. To those who helped the campaign come this far, I am truly grateful and will remember your contributions always,” said Clampitt. “However, it has become apparent that if we are to retire the politics of the past we will need to unite behind one Independent candidate. Today, I am announcing that I am withdrawing my candidacy and supporting Michael Brown. I have committed the resources of my campaign to helping elect him as DC’s next Councilmember – At Large.”

The merging of the two campaigns comes at a rather unique time in DC’s brief political history. Michael Brown’s campaign has already taken on three members of Clampitt’s now-former staff, including Clampitt’s Campaign Manager Jarvis Houston and Field Director Ezra Mathis. Other resources formerly under Clampitt’s control will now be at Brown’s disposal as he continues his election bid and adopts portions of Clampitt’s platform.

Michael Brown agrees with my positions on these issues, and I look forward to seeing him champion these issues on the campaign trail and on the Council. Once he is elected, I will continue to work with him and other community leaders to ensure that we enact the constructive changes that will make Washington the world class city it can be.”

Clampitt, who had previously served in various leadership roles with organizations such as DC Young Democrats, will remain active in city politics. He will also work to elect progressives both nationally and in the DC region as he has in the past. His career in the United States Navy Reserve remains very important to him and there is a high probability that he could deploy to a combat zone in the near future.
