The Elusive Metal Shopping Cart

What is the deal with all of these metal carts I see everywhere? And where does one get one for less than $40? I’ve never seen one before moving to the East Coast, and I’m dismayed that everyone seems to have one (that is, except my roommate and me). I’ve been far too shy to stop random people on the sidewalks to inquire because I still haven’t figured out the friendliness rating of the District.

Please, tell me where to get one on the cheap. My womanly arms are going to grow out of proportion to the rest of my body pretty soon if I don’t get some relief from carrying gallons upon gallons of chocolate milk the two blocks home from the nearest market. (No, I don’t have a problem. I just like chocolate milk. There’s nothing wrong with that.)

They sell them in Giant. I had one when I first moved here and then it fell apart in the middle of the street and all my groceries go everywhere.

  2. Gary Imhoff Says:

Most supermarkets have them in stock, at least occasionally. Bed, Bath, and Beyond, Linens and Things, and The Container Store usually have them, but the models they stock are either flimsy, expensive, or both. The best bet for both price and sturdiness is Rodman’s Drug Store on Wisconsin Avenue.

look, i know we’re colleagues and all, but come on. that has to be the stupidest question since, i don’t know,

    where’s the jumbo slice?

how do i get to adams morgan?

    where’s ben’s chili bowl?

  5. Mark Says:

Most neighborhood hardware stores stock them in a variety of sizes and colors. I’ve even seen a stainless steel model… Now that’s sweet. If I didn’t have panniers and a bike, I’d so be there…

  6. Nikki Says:

You can find those carts at your neighborhood hardware store. Hardware stores in DC don’t just carry the usual: tool kits, plungers, nails, and ladders. They also offer shower curtains, the little hooks to hang them up with, trash cans, dish racks, cups, plates, silverware and even the elusive metal shopping cart you are looking for.

  7. Pop Cesspool Says:

I’m still marveling at the dead-on “Andy Rooney” tone of the post itself. (And you know Andy has some “womanly arms” at this point in his life, too.)

  8. Leigh McKenna Says:

The main grocery market in Mt. Pleasant (Best something) used to have them. Haven’t checked in a while. I’m sure that would be just about the cheapest place to look.

  9. allan Says:

Just take one of the grocery store carts. My neighbors did that. Anytime I saw them I would shake my head.

  10. sara.h Says:

Trader Joe’s in Foggy Bottom has them. I’ve seen them there at the Customer Service counter.

  11. Mary Says:

    There’s this thing called Google…

  12. J. Says:

People - play nice. It was a logical question and sarcasm (Mary) just displays the stereotype that Washingtonians aren’t friendly

I would say target is your best bet

  13. Mike Licht Says:

Ask a little old lady where she got hers — it will make her day. Lots of older gals use these intead of walkers (pride, you know).

  14. Jaylin Says:

    J - Washingtonians aren’t friendly. That’s not a stereotype.

(It’s not just our city either. If the US quit bombing other countries maybe the country’s reputation would fare better as well.)

i am so over these “new to dc” posts. i read this blog to learn more about dc, not learn pointless stuff about someone who doesn’t have a clue. congrats on getting a job at the CITY PAPER of a city you know nothing about. stop using this blog to ask questions with answers your coworkers should know. egads.

  16. Amanda Hess Says:

Note to Brianne: Washington itself is actually much friendlier than the City Paper blog.

  17. Ernest Says:

I so agree, al. The post is quite devoid of any depth. It fails to emphasize the stuff that matters, such as the rising price of foods as well as gasoline, or diesel for that matter.

  18. Bob Says:

    Or kerosine. The burden, really.

  19. Ernest Says:

    Or kerosene.

The chocolate milk. Must Brianne feed her pimples?

Amanda is so right. The city is the friendliness itself.

Whenn I moved from Ward 8 to Ward 6, I decided to sell the car and buy wheeled cart that all my friends affectionately call my “granny cart”. Isn’t that sweet of them?

I got mine 2 years ago from Bed Bath and Beyond with the lovely 20% coupon! They have a wide assortment and when shopping for a granny cart, a wide assortment is always nice.
