Weekend in Review (WIR)

*I mean, there are plenty of stories out there this weekend, not the least of which is the weather. The heat is really impressive, and it’s affecting how people around the region are going about their lives. In that sense, weather is one of the most important issues for a newspaper to take up.

*But then again, there’s the presidential race, which is reducible to the future of our country, our children, our economy, our greenhouse emissions, and our Earned Income Tax Credits. So viewed from that perspective, all the news and analysis of Hillary’s latest moves is one of the most important issues for a newspaper to take up, especially considering the earth-shattering news that Tom Delay’s wife plans to vote against McCain.

*But what about Iraq? Right there you got the more than 4,000 military personnel who’ve been killed in a conflict that is draining our country both emotionally, financially, and imperially. So in that sense, Iraq is one of the most important issues for a newspaper to take up.

*But then again and again, I vote for large play for the Nadal-Federer final at the French Open. Take a look at what happened here. The Spaniard just destroyed the Swiss can’t-miss in straight sets. Granted, this is not Federer’s surface, but combined with losses in tourneys earlier this year, it’s gotta make you wonder whether this fellow will flame out before eclipsing Pete Sampras’ record of 14 victories in Grand Slam outings.
