Pity you had such a bad experience. My experience with Washingtoniana was much better. They were really great when I was researching my house last summer. Librarians showed me resources I could not possibly know about. They have so much information there.

I don’t think your bad experience in the Washingtoniana Division was typical. I’ve done research in there on numerous occasions, and I’ve always been impressed by the high level of service given by its librarians. I have found them to be knowledgeable and helpful in general.

That said, your point is well taken about the water fountains - MLK Library has a long way to go before it is the kind of main library you would expect to find in the nation’s capital. Some of the collections are great, but the physical environment is still kind of depressing. There seems to have been some improvements made in the last few years - but I imagine it’s daunting when things have been let go for so long.

The MLK Library water fountains do not work because of the high content of lead in the plumbing. Most staff have to pay out of their own pockets to have water shipped to their respective divisions.

That and minimal climate control and patronage on most days that makes it look like the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal…well, be glad that you DON’T have to work there!
