Washington Post Hands Out Pink Slips!

This week, longtime staffers at the Washington Post have opened big, important packets that come from the top company executives. In those packets, they’ve found very serious sheets of paper printed on pink! stock.

Holy smokes–layoffs?

Actually, a reading of the fine print furnishes a different, and far more comforting, reality: These are the early retirement packages that the Post is using to trim the newsroom. The color choice just managed to–momentarily–freak out some people who understand code pink in an employment context.

Katharine Weymouth, the paper’s publisher, says, “To be honest, I was not aware that pink sheets accompanied packets but I am confident that it was random and unintentional. It certainly was not our intent to cause any anxiety. On the contrary - our goal was to get the packets out to people and to cause as little disruption as possible.”
