Our Morning Roundup
Mr. T in DC argues that the old Bell High School is worth saving. Its “pre-war sturdy old brick structure, with attractive contrasting bands of buff-colored brickwork” shouldn’t be replaced with a ballfield: “Who needs athletic fields, anyway? School sports only lead to unrealistic dreams of professional athletic careers, and let’s not forget the inevitable brutalization of the weak by the strong in gym class. Dodgeball is nothing more than state-sanctioned bullying, you can lose an eye in a towel-snapping incident in the locker room…”
Metrocurean gives a rundown of local James Beard nominees. These include Central Michel Richard for best new restaurant. Read what our beloved food critic had to say about attempting to make its famed lobster burger. For the full list of nominees, go here.
Wonkette has a pretty funny riff on the amazingly disturbing New Republic cover photo experiment.
The DC Sports Bog shares his thoughts on the Hoyas upset loss this past weekend. He gets a little edgy:
“I’m not as on-board with the “the refs destroyed the Hoyas” line of criticism. I watched most of the game back on TiVo, and while some of those offensive foul calls were ticky-tack, there was actual contact involved on virtually all of ‘em. I saw one (on Patrick Ewing Jr. late in the second half) that appeared to be completely bogus, and I think the second one on Hibbert also seemed spotty, but two missed calls probably didn’t cost Georgetown the game.”
Prince of Petworth gets excited by the news that Columbia Heights Coffee is now serving lox. PoP also answers a thorny question concerning vandalism.
The Anti DC finds some comic gold [it's obvious].
Your wake-up song. It’s called “Better As A Girl.” It’s by Stricken City. Thank you, Gorilla vs. Bear.

Thanks for the link. I’d add that I’d like to see more McLaughlin Group parodies, but, well, I don’t think any spoof could ever match the obvious (as you quite rightly point out) hilarity of the original. “The next man on the moon will be Chinese!”

Thanks for the mention - as you can tell, my old gym class pretty much resembled the Lord of the Flies.
