More on the D.C. Wire Relaunch

From Bob McCartney, the Washington Post’s top Metro editor.

The new D.C. Wire will provide deeper coverage of D.C. politics, including news for which we lack space in the paper. By allowing readers to comment, it will also help us engage citizens in a conversation about government, politics and life in the city. The blog appeared for a time in the past, especially during the last mayoral election, but it lapsed in part because of resource pressures and staff changes. We’re happy to enhance our journalism by offering it again.

McCartney is an old pro in this biz, a guy who’s run his share of gigs–including other top management jobs at the Post as well as the International Herald Tribune. I dare say, however, that this will test his mettle; by re-launching this thing in such a public way, he’s really stapling the project to his tenure. And with just six people officially assigned to the D.C. Wire, all of whom are busy with their routine workloads, McCartney and his editors will have to be riding herd on the content providers just to avoid another collapse.
