Our Morning Roundup

Hear Mount Pleasant has an update on relief efforts for the people displaced by last week’s massive fire:

Residents donated $10,000 to the Columbia Heights Shaw Family Support Collaborative through the collection point at Pfeiffer’s Hardware that will go directly to tenants for housing needs. Along with the baby shower for Edilma Alvarez, generous neighbors put together and delivered care packages for all the children and babies who are staying at the two hotels where displaced families are temporarily living. On top of the huge volume of donations sent to Neighbors Consejo, local residents filled the 26 foot truck that we rented with household goods that were delivered to the Serve DC site this weekend. In addition, Haydee’s and Don Juan’s have provided meals for the displaced and Don Jaime’s donated proceeds of his brunches last weekend to the fire victims.

Donations of furniture are now being sought. So check in with Hear Mount Pleasant. I wondered: Where’s Laurie Collins? She’s the super controversial head of the Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Alliance. Its website’s big news: DDOT Launches Traffic Study! Apparently, they’ve collected some donations. Still, I didn’t spy Collins in the photos from this awesome charity event.

The D.C. Sports Bog asks Duke players: Which is the hardest place to play? The players’ answer: University of Maryland. Best response: “Probably Maryland,” Gerald Henderson said. “I don’t know, they must just really hate us over there, because whenever we get on the court, it’s like the devil’s coming in there. Well, the Devils are coming in there.” Not that it matters much now that the Terps had a complete meltdown.

D.C. Foodies take a trip to Dr. Granville Moore’s, the H Street Belgium joint: “Granville Moore’s is, first and foremost, a tribute to some of the best things that Belgium has contributed to international cuisine - mussels (moules), beers of every conceivable body and style, and golden fried potatoes (frites).” Read our beloved critic’s thorough take.

And Now, Anacostia confronts the mess of telephone wires overhead. The blog digs into the issue and finds some really cool historical artifacts. A must read.

    Where’s Laurie Collins?

    Dearest Jason,

Charity begins at home — first help the needy in your community–not posting bragging rights on someone’s blog or website of what one has done. Had you looked more closely to our website, you would have seen that MPNA did post something under “Top Stories” on March 14 on how people can help and where to check for latest updates. In fact, I posted the first posting on www.mtpleasantdc.org/forum that morning of the fire. We directed everyone to check that area for updated information.

We also contacted our MPNA friend, Louis Henderson, founder of NAFFCCA, (the National Association of Former Foster Care Children of America), who delivered a truck load of hundreds of clothings, shoes, for men and women–for working purposes (i.e., having to get back to work) through a local DC program, Career Gear.

MPNA then coordinated an after hours shopping spree with Goodwill’s Falls Church store which is about to go under remodeling and has offered everything of need in their store. They had set aside special hours for us to come in on Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Then, MPNA sponsored a Spring Egg Hunt last Saturday morning where we got over 75 children to attend. We collected 15 bags of donations and with a giant live human bunny in tow, traveled with MPD to the hotel to drop off donations, pass out decorated eggs and such and visited the children.

I’m sorry you didn’t see any pictures of me in any “charity” event photo albums. I could care less–not sure why you do. It’s also not about who can update their website or blogs with the most information. It’s about what you do and how you feel about it that matters. When I was at Neighbors Consejo, (yep, I was there too!) words could not describe the generosity of what I saw. So many bags on the front lawn–covered completely piles upon piles of wonderful donations. Left me speechless.

Mt. Pleasant has always been good at pulling it all together in times of need, especially where things are truly important to everyone. We come together quite well.

That’s what it is all about.

Thanks for mentioning my blog upgrade. I think it does suck a little less now! I’m planning more frequent, and hopefully more interesting entries.

  3. Long Time Resident Says:

    To: Jason Cherkis,

If you had really looked, you would have seen Laurie Collins and the rest of the MPNA–we were not all on Mt Pleasant St.
Mt Pleasant people always come together in an emergency. We all gave our time and money and did all we could to help–we collected clothing for days. Your pot shot at Laurie Collins and the MPNA was tasteless and served no good purpose. Shame on the City Paper for allowing this sort of reporting.
