People Will Complain About Anything
To those grousing about this morning’s helicopters hovering over Mount Pleasant: 1) Give it up; 2) You live in a city, remember?; 3) Hundreds of people lost their homes, ya know?
There was enough whining on the Shepherd Park listserv that WJLA’s Managing Editor Dan Patrick had to respond. He wrote:
WJLA-TV and NewsChannel 8 has been getting complaints about “our helicopter” hovering over the scene of the Mount Pleasant fire this morning after a posting on a email group. I can assure you, due to flight restrictions post 9/11, our helicopter can come no closer than the northern portion of the Beltway in Montgomery County. We were not over the scene this morning, causing the noise issues for these residents. The only helicopters that would be allowed in the that airspace would be MPD’s helicopter or the United State’s Park Police helicopter.
And the response from a swell Shepherd Park citizen:
My sincere apologies to WJLA Channel 8. The helicopter hovering above Shepherd Park this morning was indeed a news helicopter, not military or police, but what looked like an ‘8′ was revealed to be a ‘6′ after the helicopter passed closer to my home. There is no Channel 6 in the DC area, but whoever they were need to be grounded, fined, and jailed.
Priceless.

Jason aka Insenstive Lout,
The Mount Pleasant fire was indeed a tragedy and our community is reaching out to help.
Helicopters come and go from Walter Reed AMC all the time; Shepherd Park is used to over flights. What we aren’t used to is the new media (your profession)deciding it is a good idea to hover for 2 hours is one spot (INSIDE RESTRICTED NATIONAL CAPITAL AIR SPACE)
I guess you, the blog-o-meister thinks the 4th
estate’s zeal to get a story is OK and neighborhood children being awakened at 5:00am is unimportant and funny. Our Shepherd E.S. teachers didn’t have an easy day with overtired kids.
Ohhh, that’s right you’re problably single, live alone, (very alone) and never want to interact with children or pets; just sit in front of the computer and opine about things you are are SO incredibly KNOWLEDGEABLE. Then your small group of friends (very small) tell you how wonderful and witty your commentary is, and that yeah we stuck it to those uppity folks on the flower streets.
Your real world is very small Jason. But, hey, its what earns you a paycheck.

While Shepherd Park is indeed used to helicopters due to its proximity to Walter Reed, they are in no way as intrusive or obnoxious as the news helicopter that had no business being where it was and when it was there.
Inside the beltway is restricted airspace. Aside from being loud, helicopters are inherently dangerous, and it was irresponsible to keep one in a low hover over a densly popultated area just to get a few minutes of footage, if indeed that is what it was doing. I also am concerned that DHS did not properly respond to what could just as easily been a threat as a news helicopter.

You know what, ShepDC? People who say rude things under anonymous monikers are jerks, plain and simple–whether their comments are right or not. If you want to be rude, at least don’t be a coward about it.

How is “Amanda A” any more identifiable than “ShepDC”? Post your full name, and email, Amanda, and then you can get on a high horse about identifying yourself on here. Otherwise, it’s pot calling kettle beige.
