How to Help Those Displaced by the Mt. P Fire
The hundreds of people displaced by last night’s fire at 3145 Mount Pleasant Street need help. Many of them are now struggling to find shelter and to replace their belongings. Among the displaced are many children and elderly.

Do you think the Mayor will swoop in and help displaced residents like he did when he swooped in and helped business owners after a fire engulfed the Eastern Market building?

maybe someone should approach the new Target about donating some supplies/clothes to the residents. It would be a nice to see them helping out the community in a direct way like that, and would help to establish them as a fixture in the community instead of just a store on a street.

Sara might want to note that the Target has already completely rebuilt the school library at Bancroft Elementary School. Target hosted a memorable party with players from the Washington Redskins to open the libary in the Fall. No one would ever, ever, ever say that Target is just a store on the street. They have done a lot for our community over the last year.
I think it would be great for them to contribute, but they don’t deserve any backhanded criticism!!!

it wasn’t a criticism at all, it was merely a suggestion. but thanks for assuming the worst.

I love this line: “No one would ever, ever, ever say that Target is just a store on the street.” Don has got to be kidding.

David Simon needs to film a series on Target’s street cred.

Or better yet, Don needs to promptly e-mail Pelecanos.

@Don
Been poking around looking for something about Target’s contribution to Bancroft, but I haven’t found anything so I am not sure for whom this party was so memorable. I don’t doubt that it’s true, and I don’t discount the contribution to the community. That said, I think this presents a unique opportunity for the Target folks and DCUSA to step up when the community is in urgent need.

Target does way more for the communities it operates in than most stores. They are a reliable sponsor for community festivals, and donate millions to organizations every year. Not many companies can match Target’s philanthropic deeds. I also called Target this morning, but their community outreach person was not in today. Yeah, they have a community outreach person. I would not be shocked if they came through with something. So — who will call the other soon-to-be-tenants of DCUSA…Bed Bath & Beyond, Lane Bryant, Children’s Place, Best Buy…. And what about Giant? Let’s not put all the burden on Target to be a good community citizen.

Sara,
A phone call to Bancroft’s administration would solve this issue in seconds. I can’t believe I’m having this conversation. Isn’t this just a simple answer of “Life exists offline?”
And what was that Pellecanos comment about? I haven’t spoken to him in 20 years and doubt he’d remember me.

Target has in fact donated to the victims of the fire. I am hesitant to put details here for fear that the donation they have put in place may be abused by non-victims, but they have indeed stepped in to help.
