Though I still think Athitakis' take on the Wire in his cover story fell far short of thoughtful analysis, I will concede that the first two thirds of season 5 were not as strong as previous seasons. I think one of the overlooked reasons for this is the bad acting of the newsroom cast. The guy from Homicide who they got to play Gus was solid, but everyone else was just garbage. I think if they had the same caliber acting in the newsroom that they had for most of the cops, it would've been stronger.

I will also say that this season had some moments that stacked up against anything we'd seen in the series. In particular, Bubbles' speech on his anniversary of being clean in the penultimate episode was a real payoff for the viewers that have followed the character.

All in all, they struck enough of the right chords in the finale to make me very happy. The show's legacy is most certainly intact.

Come on! Alt weeklies love to rag on daily papers. I think we're more likely to relish Simon's assessment of the old rusty giants--the cheating, prize-hungry reporters and editors, the boring procedural coverage. And not all of us decided the show was no good.

Funny how when the show gives newspapers a harsh look in the mirror, the show suddenly is not any good...at least that's what I keep seeing in newspaper articles and on their Web sites. You sound like the Baltimore city council members who are in denial of the show's verisimilitude.

Thank you for the magnanimous gesture of not spoilering the show, unfortunately Tom Shales of the Post was not able to follow suit.
