"Machine" gun implies fully automatic (that means that when you pull the trigger then bullets continue to exit the barrel until you stop pulling the trigger). It is a semi-automatic. This means that when you pull the trigger then one bullet comes out, even if you held the trigger until next week. To make another bullet come out, you release the trigger, then pull the trigger again. "assault (rifle and or weapon)" also does not mean "fully automatic" though the media sure likes to imply it (though many of them, like the author of this rant, are likely just ignorant about gun terminology and just choose whatever sounds worse.
