I Love Target Too, But…

That intersection is a total disaster of urban planning. The traffic will from now on always suck. It’s ugly. And there is nowhere to sit. The designers obviously thought they were being all civic-minded by incorporating a nice big open plaza–filled with gravel. But there are no benches. Who wants to sit on gravel? Actually, maybe they thought of that too, and decided they didn’t want me to hang out.

Also, this is a good time to mourn Mitch Hedberg once again. One of his best jokes is about Target.

As usual, it’s to the point: “I tried to walk into Target, but I missed. Damn. I think the entrance to Target should have people splattered all around.” Watch the real deal here, around minute 2:50.

Maybe we could all stage a protest in which we aim and miss at the Target doors until someone builds some benches.

I heard somewhere that there are plans for that dumb gravel plaza. Grass and benches and some kind of mini-ampitheater are involved.

Re: Mitch: the jellybean “lemme just HAVE some” joke has a special place in my heart.

Angela, there’s actually quite a grand plan (”scheme” if you will) in place to upgrade that intersection. They promise to get rid of the gravel and add permanent benches. I can only imagine what a nightmare the area will be once construction is underway…

“One time I went to a craft fair or somethin’ and they had a jelly bean jar with a sign on it that said, guess how many jelly beans are in the jar. Awe, come on, man, just let me have some. I tell you what, you guess how many I want. If you guess a handful, you are right.”

Given the pedestrian traffic now and in the future for that area, the City ought to strongly consider some novel solutions to manage the situation.

I just wrote about this today…As happy as I am that I can show at Target without having to venture to PG Plaza or Wheaton, this is defintely going to make driving up 14th Street more congested than it already is. It’ll be interesting to see how they work things out when it comes to all the people that are going to be frequenting this part of town now.

I walk through that intersection every day, and traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular moves just fine, given that it’s a dense, urban neighborhood. The traffic cops on duty yesterday just added to the confusion and atmosphere of hysteria, when traffic was only a little heavier than usual. You just have to figure out the pattern of the lights, and when it’s safe to walk on a don’t walk signal (the walk/don’t walk signals are set very conservatively at that intersection so half the time you can just go). In other words, I think that compared to armed daylight robberies on the Metro escalators and U Street ice cream shops, this issue is a bit of a non-issue to me.

The question is, why would you drive up 14th Street? It’s sucked since they started this work several years ago. 16th or 13th or Sherman are the way to go through there.
