Highlights from Charlotte Allen Live Chat

Housewife

This afternoon, Charlotte Allen came online to have a little chat about last week's op-ed. (The Post also just posted this great rebuttal to Allen's piece, penned by Post legal administrator Caitlin Gibson and actor/writer Rachel Manteuffel).

The obvious winner was this question, posited toward the end of the chat:

Anywhere: Hey, Charlotte. Nice tits. Sincerely, a guy.

Charlotte Allen: Hey, Washington Post forum moderators: I thought obscene comments were supposed to be filtered out of this forum? How did this one get in?

In total, Allen answered 53 questions, but raised at least 26 herself, in addition to "How Dumb Can We Get?" Compiled together, they give an interesting picture of the trajectory of the chat. Halfway through, Allen even begins referring to herself in the third person. Here are her questions, in order:

Is this a compliment or an insult? I dunno--what sex are you? How about an accurate picture? Why do women buy this stuff? Is the pope German? Isn't it obvious what's funny and what's not? Why can't a woman make fun of women? Are women such a sacrosanct subject nowadays that they're off-limits for anyone to write about them except in a reverent portrayal of them as victims of men? What--are we women always supposed to portray ourselves as victims of patriarchy? Huh? Minority? And when did women get the vote--1921? 1923? Wasn't Roe vs. Wade decided in 1973? Uh, who voted for the invasion of Iraq? I thought obscene comments were supposed to be filtered out of this forum? How did this one get in? Why is the exact year germane to anything? Charlotte Allen gets a bonus check? Charlotte Allen's background? How much of this stuff do you want? Heat exhaustion? Evasive? What do you want to know--whether I've been convicted of a felony? My credentials?

I'd also like to note that, at one point, Charlotte Allen actually utilizes the phrase "As if!"

You know that Charlotte Allen was a City Paper staffer in the 1990s, right? Look it up.

A Washington, D.C.-area freelance writer used to work for the City Paper? Wow, good find, Woodstein
