Washington Times “Scare Quotes” Are History

John Solomon took over the Washington Times on Jan. 28.

But he arrived today, via a message from the paper's copy operation.

The news, in short: No more scare quotes.

Longtime Washington Times readers know well what this is all about: Under the regime of Wesley Pruden, the Times, unwilling to acknowledge anything so radical and immoral as gay marriage, treated the term in its pages as gay "marriage."

Likewise other terms. In the old Washington Times, there were no illegal immigrants, just "illegal aliens"; no gays, just "homosexuals."

Now comes the following memo from the Solomon regime, wiping out this legacy in one flick of the wrist:

All:

Here are some recent updates to TWT style.

1) Clinton will be the headline word for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

2) Gay is approved for copy and preferred over homosexual, except in clinical references or references to sexual activity.

3) The quotation marks will come off gay marriage (preferred over homosexual marriage).

4) Moderate is approved, but centrist is still allowed.

5) We will use illegal immigrants, not illegal aliens.

Erik, did you go to college to become a blogger? You know it's mostly fourteen year old kids that do this kind of stuff. And nobody comments so you probably don't have many readers. Maybe this whole writing thing just wasn't meant to be...

  2. #2

Isn't it kind of scary that someone simply advocating neutral journalism (Solomon) actually sounds kinda heroic?

  3. #3

Sounds like Ronnie is from Wingnut Central where scare is still the new pink...

The last time I checked Michelle Malkin wasn't 14...

  4. #4

Why would TWT choose to adopt the euphemisms of the left?

  5. #5

...maybe they got bored after using the euphemisms of the right for so long?

  6. #6

    digiemzi: What euphemisms?

  7. #7

You're all a bunch of idiots. First of all, this blog entry was mentioned in Romenesko, probably the most read blog in journalism. I'm sure Wemple has thousands of readers, unfortunately only the dumb ones make comments.

Second of all, this isn't about euphemisms, it's about the newspapers indsutry's need to always align with the center -- not the right or left. Gay is the PC term because so many people have used homosexual as a dirty word. It's just like negro being replaced with black. There is no need to put quotes around marriage as it passes judgment on it. Leaving out the quotes does not mean the Times is casting its vote in favor or against.

You all need to grow up.

  8. #8

The newspaper industry does not align with center. That is a lie that can be disproven easily. How easily you ask? Let's play a "guess the party affiliation" game.

When you see a governmental official caught doing something unethical or charged with something unethical, count how many times his party affiliation is mentioned. For bonus points, count how many adjectives are used to describe him. If you're too lazy to perform this test, here's what you will find: when a Republican is in the crossfire, the article says so often and colorfully. When a Democrat is, the party name is mentioned alone (if at all) and without adjectives.

As for this article, TWT is taking over the terms used by the left (gay replaces homosexual), gay marriage as opposed to gay "marriage" (because man+woman != man+man), and so forth. Yes, TWT has sold out.

The Washington TIMES was an ally of the right, now it appears the Times has lurched to the Commie Left.

    Too bad.

The readership and the ad revenue will dive. I certainly won't read the NEW PINKO TIMES.

    RIP Washington Times

  10. #10

And let's not forget uninvited guest instead of burgler.

  11. #11

They werent the "right" times or the "left" times. They will always be the Moonbat times. How "pinko" times is any worse than "moonie" times I will never know...

  12. #12

    ET TU, BRUTUS?

  13. #13

Looks to me as if the "new sheriff in town" has taken the pc kool-aid brokeback style. Apparently truth is the first causalty in the "new sheriff's" hunta at what was the WT, and now readers will be treated to the same newspeak as all the loons reading the lamestreem meejuh propaganda.

  14. #14

Jeez Erik, based on some of your commenters maybe your headline should be, "WT "editor" leaves, takes dog whstle with him."

They've become lost while on walkies.

  15. #15

These morons don't get just like those at the NYT don't get it. The more these papers take a nose dive because of their manipulative "journalism", the more they push to go that direction even further. What's the defnition of insanity? Repeating the same mistake over and over and expecting to get different results. The left can't make it in radio talk(proven), they've ruined the newspapers(look at what the inheritance case at NYT has done with that rag) etc. They do damage and are failures at virtually every media outlet they infect. But hey, let's keep it going! LOL. Idiots, and most educated by idiots in our universities. On a business level these people seem nearly suicidal.

  16. #16

Looks like the wingnuts are out in force; if you're not an extremist right-wing homophobe, you're a pinko. Why don't you un-American bigots move to Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Iraq, where they share your irrational hatred of gays? By doing so, you will raise the average IQ of the United States.

  17. #17

I never mentioned a thing about gays. And FYI, we are already finding out as time goes on just how much $ some of the places you mention are investing in our media outlets, chiefly Saudis. Wonder why they might be doing that eh? The left hashad, and still has the MSM locked up and cannot leave a thing to chance apparently in wanting it all, including recent discussions regarding bringing the so-called 'Fairness' Doctrine back out of mothballs, chiefly in response to the fit they are having over the influence of talk radio on issues. The left fails at something, they seek to destroy those who are successful including the outlets they have their success on. 'Newspeak' is the right word. I personally am fed up with it, and so are a whole heck of alot of others out here, so keep on keepin on and stink up yet another once decent new outlet.

  18. #18

No matter how you try to hide immorality, it is plain to see. And never accepted.

  19. #19

Good for John Solomon. It's a step in the right direction, though "gay marriage" is still the wrong term just as "black marriage" or "handicapped marriage" would be wrong if the couple were a certain race or physical state. When all Americans have equal rights under the law, marriage will just be marriage. I think the person who insists on maintaining a caste system in this country is afraid of losing his privileged status. He's gotta keep "those people" down to remind himself that he is a superior being, even if his main talent is toting the heaviest loads of arrogance and animosity. The anti-gay person often speaks for God, as though God isn't speaking when God breathes life into all the babies who turn out to be gay. He is sure he has the authority to say who I can or cannot marry, though he doesn't know me from Adam. It's not enough for him to mind his own business, he's got to poke into my business. Rather than focus his attention on any of a thousand issues that might benefit from his personal involvement, he'd rather spit bile about "them" holding hands and making him sick over their blatant affection. This is the heart of the person who tells you that I and millions of other Americans don't deserve to fall in love, get married, make a family, build a business, go to worship, or walk in the sunshine hand in hand like other couples do.

  20. #20

How whimpy. I loved the times when I lived in Annapolis but will be watching with a critical eye now. We give the libs tons of grief for using PC terms and now we dive right in to the same. This is the death of the newspaper.

  21. #21

PS Ryan is a dolt. We replaced homosexual with gay because homosexual became offensive? We replaced Negro with Black because it became offensive? Changing the word doesn't change the meaning.

The Times will never compete with the Post. Trust me the psot is not centrist. It has a right of center following because they report the news that the lib papers fail to print. Taking quotations off changes nothing.

  22. #22

Muir is right, marriage should just be marriage. I can't wait until the day Shep, my beloved canine companion, and I can wed. People are so judgemental, using horrible bigotted terms like "bestiality." Marriage should be available to everyone!

  23. #23

Mr. Friend, if you want to marry your dog you're in the wrong species. But go ahead, get down on all fours and sniff butts all day if you like. It's none of my business. Just don't hurt the dog.

  24. #24

Absolutely refreshing to see a person supporting government recognition of homosexual behavior admit they think bestiality has the same moral equivalance.
Rather than concern for a person with such grossly deviant behavior, the only concern expressed is for the dog.

  25. #25

In response to all the pro-homosexual propaganda, let me say this: According to the census dept, people who engage in homosexual behavior represent a little over 2 % of the U.S. population and yet, according to the Justice dept, they are responsible for 20% of the sexual assaults against children. Now if 2% of the population is doing 20% of that kind of crime, why would anyone want to promote “Gay Marriage” and permit these people to adopt children to abuse?

To paraphrase James Carvel, IT'S THE BEHAVIOR STUPID! Someone should tell the NEW P.C. Man at the TWT to check out “The New Joy of Gay Sex” at his local library in D.C. The go back to calling these perverts what they are: “Perverts”

  26. #26

If you want to create more problems in this country, then go ahead and call the illegal aliens, illegal immigrants. Soon you will just be calling them immigrants like all the other leftist papers. Just remember, most Americans have no problem with immigrants, it is illegal aliens that Americans are upset with. When you classify them just as immigrants, and readers have no way of telling the difference, you will soon have the readers feeling negative towards the immigrant. Then I suppose we will have to think of another name for the legal immigrants.

Nice to see that some progress is being made at the Washington Times.

With George Bush going the way of the Dodo and Limbaugh melting down over John McCain and Hillary and Obama both poised (whoever wins the primaries) to bring some intelligence back to the Executive Branch, this may be a good year. Know Hope!

PS - To all you so-called conservative taliban Christianists out there, keep banging those rocks together. You might evolve someday.

Where the hell did you get THAT statistic, Mikey? National Review Online or Fred Phelps' God Hates Fags website? I don't know any gays that molest children, Mikey, but I do know a str8 boi who is about to go to jail for owning child porn.

We are here, we are queer, and we aren't going anywhere, Mikey. Get over yourself.

Another Mike: You're absolutely right. I can't believe these liberal freaks don't realize that the best way to prevent deviant sexual behavior is to isolate people and discourage them from forming stable relationships.

People: It's as simple as this (from someone who used to actually work at the Times for a couple of years) The old alliance of Pruden/Coombs/Evil Others is over. A new regime is in place, and they are listening to staffers, readers, consultants and goverment officials who are simply telling them in plain language that Pruden and Coombs drove the paper and its reputation squarely into the ground, and it's amazing the paper even survived under them. That's not an over-reaction--it's the truth. And this is why Solomon and Co. are changing old, idiotic, arch-conservative viewpoints that really went out about, oh, 1967 or thereabouts. Really. The old ways just will not work, and Solomon--and some others at News World--are apparently smart enough to realize this, and are changing to adjust to modern ways. It's not so much 100 percent political, as it is really about just catching up from being about 40 years behind the times.

    Response to Dana Curtis:
I was not speaking of Iraq, but since you bring the subject up, 120 billion dollars is less than half what the illegal aliens are costing this country. Conservative estimate is 338 billion a year. And for your information I am 25% Native American and I did not write this comment to be humorous!

  34. #34

The Bush administration's "open borders/amnesty" immigration policy has done immeasurable damage to our nation. Forty percent of all ILLEGAL ALIENS now domiciled in the U.S. arrived here since January, 2001. What a rotten stinking legacy Mr. Bush is leaving us.

InRussetShadows said... Let’s play a "guess the party affiliation" game.

OK, I played. I Googled "Renzi indictment" and looked at the newspaper stories that popped up. Here's what I found:

    NY Times:
    - One mention of Renzi's party affiliation

    Boston Globe:
    - One mention
    - Later mention of 25 R retirements announced (accurate)
    - Later mention of R loss in 2006 due to "string of scandals" (accurate)

    USA Today:
    - One mention

    Washington Times:
    - One mention

    LA Times:
    - One mention for Renzi
    - Later mention of R's Ney and Cunningham in jail (accurate)
    - Later mention of R Ted Stevens under investigation (accurate)
    - Later mention of D William Jefferson under investigation (accurate)

    Washington Post:
    - Put "(R-Ariz.)" after his name
    - Later mentions of scandals involvin Cunningham, Ney, and Jefferson (accurate) ... left out Stevens

    Star Tribune:
    - One mention

The Guardian (about as left as it gets):
    - One mention

    Reuters:
    - One mention

IRS, I guess my results didn't align with your predetermined view of the world. Maybe you should do a bit of fact checking next time before making broad and silly statements.

You people never learn... Sources Ann! Link to sources when you are ranting. "Conservative estimate is 338 billion a year." Where is that data from, Ann?

I know some illegal aliens here in Indy, and the ones I know are hard working people. Yes, they are breaking the law by being here, and yes there should be some penalty for that, but the Idiot in the White House, the one that your side has been asking us to trust for eight years? The one that has run the budget into the ground, can't talk worth a damn and didn't know that levees could fail? The Moron in Chief? He has been worthless on this issue, a complete failure, as he has been a complete failure at everything in his life.

Not sure how much the cost of this is, I do know LA spends 160 million a year on programs, gang related. City after city is getting federal grants to fight gangs. And do not forget, you cannot put a price tag on the citizens that are victims of illegal alien crimes!

Ann, thanks very much. When we leave Iraq we might have some money to deal with the problems here then, don't you think?

Might have money to fix the borders properly (and not with some stupid fence), money to replace the Space Shuttle, money to actually help people whose lives are destroyed by natural disasters.

  40. #40

I suppose these stylistic changes are a good sign, but I'm still not going to read that "newspaper".

  41. #41

Dana you are very welcome! Should we leave Iraq? Just my opinion, I am not real educated in war matters, but I do think if we leave abruptly it would cause total chaos, which would be a hotbed for terrorism to grow.

And I think I am conservative in my thinking, but not a rwnj (was not sure what it meant, had to ask a friend), but I do feel the media does not educate the public in certain areas. I feel they have done a poor job on illegal immigration which was why I was upset with the Washington Times. They have been better than most, but not nearly good enough. I feel this is the most important issue in our country today. It has an influence on our economy, healthcare, terrorism, crime, etc..

    ---

Terrorism is fueled by many things. There was terrorism long before we went into Iraq, which HAD a stable if evil government. There was terrorism in Afghanistan that we helped nurture by proxy fighting the Soviets there. There was terror in the Middle East both by Israel and the Palestinians fifty years ago. There was terror in Iraq when the British originally tried to expand the Empire there.

Whether we go or stay, the muslim radicals will have something to complain about. They always do.

Better we should use the money we are wasting in the dustbowl wars here in the USA where it can help our own country.

We should never have gone into Iraq.

You want to stop illegal immigration or at least put a brake on it? That ten billion a month being tossed away over there could be very useful here.

I'll have to disagree about immigration being the most important issue. Sorry, my opinion.

Infrastructure, the falling dollar (thanks Mr. Moron Bush), the health care problem, oil, the war, inability to deal with emergencies here at home because the Shrub (Bush the Lesser) has sent the troops overseas, all these things are more important, to me.

This is so funny to me. I used to think I was just imagining their "news" had a racist angle to it. I figured it must be just my imagination becuase the paper was a real news paper and had real advertisers. In fact, as a news junkie, I noticed "quotations marks" on several occasions in the Washington Times and was confused. The first and second times were "gay marraige" and I thought they were included as a joke. It wasn't until the third time that I realized they were seriously attempting to pass judgment on "words" or "concepts" they didn't support. After discovering the weird use of quotations, I could suddenly read/see the bias in almost every story. Now I'm sad to see them go. The "quotaion marks" made their bias fun and easy to spot.

PEOPLE. what happened to understanding and acceptance? why don't we just live and let live?! stop projecting your own values onto other people. if they're not causing harm, let them do what they want, and be who they want, and YOU can be what YOU want.
i can't believe people are so narrow-minded about homosexuals. they're REAL people, with mothers and fathers and a bad side and a good side and emotions, and kindness, and creativity, and frustration and joy, and thanks to a close-minded morally projecting society, shame for their identity, which NO ONE should have to feel.
it makes me feel so hopeless when i read what people say about other people. stop making generalizations, we're all human beings, we all need love and understanding. have some tolerance and compassion, please. for the sake of the global population, which we are ALL a part of, don't forget.

  46. #46

Growing acceptance of homosexuality means a decline in social stigma associated with same-sex relationships, bistiality, sadomasohism and a consequent shift in the politics of coming out. The more people come out, ingaging in open and productove homosexual activities, organize clubs for gay and lesbian professionals, lobby congress the more accepting people are around them, and the more accepting the public becomes, the more people come out. As a proud Catholic Jew who is married to Palestinian Arab i am so happy we live in such blessed times.

Sure, go ahead and say "gay", just don't say "gay and lesbian", or "GLBT", because that would be redundant, since lesbians are homosexuals. So the term "lesbian" needs to go as well. God, I need to suck some cock, or whatever.

Illegal aliens aren't immigrants. Perhaps "invaders" or "visa-overstayers" would be better, depending on the circumstances.
