Mark Segraves actually underestimated the impact of the President's proposed budget cuts. The $2 million cut is coming directly out of the Gardens Unit and the Education and Visitors Services Unit at the National Arboretum, the only two units that provide direct services to the general public. After overhead, these two units currently have a budget of about $3 million for direct services so that a cut of this magnitude would totally decimate their ability to serve the public. Massive staff layoffs, weekend closures, abandonment of some of the Garden Displays and Plant Collections, etc. are all expected outcomes of the cut. Contact Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton and ask her to contact Rosa DeLauro, Chair of Ag Appropriations to restore cuts.

The national museum of bonsai in Washington looks amazing. I've seen a lot of pictures of it but live too far away to visit. It would be a shame if they neglected it.
