Chances of one being in a car accident are indeed higher because THERE ARE FAR MORE CARS ON THE ROAD. One of the most common motorcycle/scooter/moped accident is…wait for it…BEING HIT BY A CAR.

Andrew - wouldn’t logic follow that if one was careless enough to disregard their own safety, the safety of others would be equally disregarded if not more so? Lame.

And please, let’s not get into the whole “real” motorcycle or “people that ride scooters are X type” BS. Might as well start arguing what qualifies as a “real” car or “people that drive a Ford are C type”.

The helmet is going to keep (hopefully) your most precious organ intact, in case of accident. I did not mean your dingus, dingus-head! Scooters are usually operated by those that are too geeky to ride motorcycles- real, fast, hard-core motorcycles. There may be need to lower the level of the gene pool, but I don’t think scooter riders are the right place to start. Worthless journalists, though, lots of room for movement, there. Every want to reide a scooter, maybe a motorcycle? How about a moped? Come on, Andrew, it’s fun! WHEEEE!

hey, of course helmets save lives. Of the guys who wear them. But they don’t reduce collateral collision damage, the one you were worrying about. Therefore, for you it should be irrelevant, if he wears helmet or not. Moreover, perhaps, without helmet he would be more careful not to collide with you, than if he had one!

Mike, you’re not seriously arguing that helmets don’t save lives, are you? Because the stats don’t bear that out. Insurance companies consider scooters motorcycles. So do DMVs. I apologize for the moped joke; it’s just so good for making scooter people angry.

Where is your logic?
1st: What does the helmet have to do with collision damage?
Obviously, if scooter is going to crash, collision damage to you will be the same, regardless if rider had a helmet or not.
2nd: scooter is not a motorcycle. So your link is pointless to start with.
3rd: Link shows that motorcycles are more likely to crash, but does not say anything about collision damage relative to the cars. Obviously, damage from car or truck is going to be much more severe than from Vespa.
