I object to your mischaracterization of "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country For Old Men" as "escapist." I humbly point out that the former film addresses man's inhumanity to man, the wages of sin, the politics of greed, and the of poignancy of moustaches, while the second film addresses man's inhumanity to man, the wages of sin, the politics of greed, and the poignancy of moptop haircuts. There is nothing escapist about these topics, especially in re: moustaches and moptop haircuts.

I would also point out that a few of the "political" films you imply are somehow "anti-escapist" star Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, and Reese Witherspoon, three of the most marvelous-looking actors America has ever produced. Perhaps there is a kind of escapism in fetishizing these A-list actors' glorious visages?
