Dead Dog Loves America

An MPD officer shot and killed a D.C. family's dog on Christmas Eve, Fox 5 is reporting. Stories about pets who are shot to death seemingly write themselves. Still, Fox 5 has outdone itself by managing to recover possibly the most sympathetic accompanying photograph ever:

Scooby

This shooting victim isn't just adorable doggy; he's an adorably patriotic doggy. An internal investigation into the incident is pending: The officer claims Scooby lunged, while the dog's owner says Scooby was sitting still. Now, I'm no police investigator, but the only photograph of Scooby I've ever seen is of him sitting still, lovin' the U.S. of A. I rest my case.

I saw this report on Fox News. Dear God, the guy's dog was unleashed and made a move at the cop. The guy's defense "Anyone who knows anything about boxers would have known" blah blah blah , or some stupid bullshit like that.

That's why you keep your dog on a leash, because the sane part of the population should not be expected to know or guess how your doggie behaves. Fuck, the cop probably put the dog out of his misery, seeing as how he was confined to living in the city with a whinging sissie for an owner.

Everybody knows Boxers aren't mean. I bet that the dog was merely trying to lick the officer.

I don't know shit about boxers, and I shouldn't have to, and neither should the officer. And if a person came up to lick you, you'd lay him out cold. That dog at least deserved a swift kick in the head.

Bill, you need a swift kick in the head. Pathetic, you don't know shit about humans. You must be some kind of mutt with no balls. Go find out more before you spend you time sounding like an ignorant idiot. You and Mike Vick belong in the same prison cell.

As a dog ownwer myself, my heart breaks for this guy. What a nightmare. The problem is, that the wasn't in a Dog Park and the dog, however friendly or unfriendly was off the leash. It was just an horribly unfortunate accident.

While that area is not an official dog park, it is used as an unofficial one. There are almost always unleashed dogs on that field, all playing and running after tennis balls without incident, a fact that a cop on a regular patrol would be aware of after only one or two patrols of the area. The DC K9 cops even exercise their dogs, unleashed, on that field.

Off leash, on leash; dog park, no dog park. Makes no difference. Police officers are trained to react to the situations they are faced with, not how those situations came about. If police officers are permitted to shoot to kill dogs that run up to them, then DC should drop its handgun ban and arm all of us. The fact is that Scooby was not a threat. The officer probably didn't know that. He made an assessment that was wrong, as it turns out. But allowing for that, he was then allowed to use one level of force greater than the threat. He overreacted and used at least four levels by my count. Bottom line: an unjustified use of firearms.

why not use a tazer? cops use them on humans pretty freely - why not here?

mpd is way messed up - another great example.
