Robed the Wrong Way

This fall, nooses have been found hanging in several spots throughout the Northeast. In early September, one was found near a black cultural center at the University of Maryland. Later that month, nooses were left for two people at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. And in October, a black Columbia University professor found one hanging on her office door. Of course, these acts are committed surreptitiously. But on Saturday morning, at least one gentlemen took a bolder approach to the hate symbol. What follows is a message from George Kucik, inspector for the Metropolitan Police Department, on the First District Yahoo! Listserv:

“On Saturday morning, an off-duty officer was flagged down in reference to a subject who was walking down the street wearing Klan garb. The off-duty officer requested assistance and the subject was stopped and identified. The officers verified that he did not have any weapons etc. and that he was not wanted. He was not arrested, as the officers did not have any evidence that he had intentions to harm or threaten anyone. His information was forwarded to the Department’s Intelligence Branch for further review.â€�
