iPod or iBoot?

I’ve been scolded in the past for walking around Petworth in cowboy boots and a short skirt. But I bet my outfits are less criminogenic than iPods. Via the Legal Times blog, a recent Urban Institute study blames the recent spike in robberies on our obsession with maintaining a constant personal soundtrack. iPods cause crime because they’re easy to spot, can be re-sold for a bundle and they have the extra effect of distracting their owners, who stop paying attention to potential threats. My boots might distract the criminals, but they don’t distract me.

This article has the insight of a…well, its not very insightful at all. Half way through writing it when you realized you had nothing substantial to say - you should have just stopped.

    Angela:
A little honesty, please. You’ve been scolded for walking on Georgia Avenue in cowboy boots and a mini. Not “Petworth”, but Georgia Avenue at the Petworth/CH/PV/PP boarder. It’s different, and I imagine you know that. More directly, have you ever noticed what the hookers on GA avenue wear? And, related, where do you get your fashion tips? Not like I actually care, but leave the manufactured outrage in the shallow-end, m’kay?

  6. Angela Valdez Says:

    Well! Here goes:

The freelancer linked to by “Mike” pitched us a story about a local boy accused of robbing a bank without letting us know he was friends with the young man in question. When the freelancer started bugging me to keep certain incriminating details out of the story, (He said stuff like, “I want him to get off,” my editors and I figured things out and pulled him off the story. I didn’t use any of his writing or reporting in the story–was very careful on that point. We also did not use photographs he had provided.

And I was walking along Georgia toward my Petworth home.

No outrage here. Just generic frustration.

  7. Ernest Says:

She keeps saying that she’s frustrated
She keeps saying iPod causes crime
She’ keeps walking where she shouldn’t ‘ve been walking
And she ain’t had time to learn
But Those boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ do
These days those boots are walking all over Georgia Avenue.

Angela, I think you forgot to close your parenthesis. Sincerely, Bacon Cheese Egg.
