Iceland: A Jehovah’s Witness Faces My Demons

Editor's Note: Earlier this year, Justin wrote Iceland, a blog about his band's American tour. Justin isn't on tour anymore, but Iceland continues, twice a week, on City Desk.

"Good afternoon, sir!" exclaimed the woman at my front door.

"Good afternoon," I replied. Though it was Saturday, the woman wore her Sunday best and held a pamphlet called "Racial Harmony—Myth or Possibility?" This pamphlet sported a Watchtower imprint. Thus, I intuited that the woman before me was a Jehovah's Witness.

"Sir, let me ask you," the Witness inquired. "Have you considered that recent natural disasters—the South Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, et cetera—are the work of our Creator and a sign of the End of Days?"

"Yes," I replied. "I have often wondered whether the South Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina were the work of God and signs of the Apocalypse. Who can survey these terrible events and not wonder whether the End is coming? However, I cannot help but observe that you are a Jehovah's Witness. For this reason, I am unable to listen to your rhetoric at this time. You must understand—I have nothing personal against you. I am in no way 'anti-Jehovah's Witness.' However, I had a memorable experience as a youth which will force our conversation to prematurely conclude. Let me tell you about this experience."

I inhaled, then exhaled. The Jehovah's Witness regarded me suspiciously.

"At a very early age," I continued, "I was taught that I should never to open the door to a Jehovah's Witness. When I was five years old, a Jehovah's Witness knocked on my family's door. I was a helpful child and ran to open the door to the prospective visitor. As my little hand clutched the doorknob, my mother—intuiting that a Jehovah's Witness sought entry—screamed my name.

"'Justin!' my mother shouted. 'Do not answer that door!'

"'But mother,' I replied. 'The person at the door has already seen me.'

"'I don't care!' my mother screamed. 'Do not answer that door!'

"I was an obedient child—I immediately dropped to the floor and scampered beneath the dining room table. The Witness, who had indeed seen me, knocked a second time, and then a third time. Though my instincts screamed 'Answer the door!' I obeyed my mother, and slid farther beneath the dining room table. After an eternity, the Witness sighed, shrugged his shoulders, and walked away. My mother crept to the window and peeked outside to confirm that the Witness had gone.

"'The Jehovah's Witness has gone,' my mother informed me. 'Emerge from beneath the dining room table, but remember this—never answer the door when a Jehovah's Witness calls. Hide if you must, but do not answer the door!'"

I inhaled, then exhaled. The Jehovah's Witness squinted at me.

"So, you see," I conclued. "I cannot converse with you at this time. The power of my youthful training is, as Freud postulated, all-consuming. I have already violated it by opening the door at all. I will take your pamphlets, though."

The Jehovah's Witness gave me her pamphlets and began backing away.

"I will review your pamphlets in my spare time," I assured the retreating Witness, "and formulate an appropriate response via e-mail. My youthful training did not address e-mail. E-mail was not yet available when I was a youth, but that is another story."

All you need to know about the Jehovah's Witnesses is that they say "Jesus had his return to power" aka his second coming in the year 1914.

    What do you think?

    Debunking the Jehovah's Witnesses propaganda:
    A) They are at your door to recruit you for enslavement to their watchtower corporation, they will say that "we are just here to share a message from the Bible" this is deception right off.

    B) The 'message' is their false Gospel that Jesus had his second coming already in 1914.The problem with this,is it's not just a cute fairy tale,Jesus warned of the false prophets who would claim "..look he is here in the wilderness,or see here he is at the temple"

    C) Their anti-blood transfusion ban has killed hundreds if not thousands

    D) once they recruit you they will "love bomb" you in cult fashion to also recruit your family & friends or cut them off. There are many more dangers,Jehovah's Witnesses got a bad rap for good and valid reasons.

The Jehovah's Witnesses more closely resemble Scientology in their aggressive authoritarian tactics.

  • Randall Watters

I, too, ignored my mother's advice and took the Witnesses up on their study in 1972. I ended up getting my whole family in it except my dad, who was too smart to join. I left in 1980 after seeing years of lying from the Bethel headquarters in New York, always new prophecies never fulfilled and changing doctrines. This organization is not what it seems.

  • Ranny Watzard

Oh yes, and they also will take you into their spaceship and hug you over and over again until they are able to convert you and beam you into a Kingdom Hall where the doors are locked and you can never leave.

Fact. Not taking a blood transfusion kills a lot less people than taking one - read recent medical observations. Disease kills, not JWs.

Fact. Jesus did take kingly power in 1914. Witnesses are not the only ones who figured that something big would happen that year thanks to Bible prophecy. Even if you don't like 1914, look at the decline in morality and the world events around you that signify we are living in the last days. How much longer do YOU think it will last?

Fact. Everything JWs share IS based on the Bible. And if you don't want to agree with that, tell me what organization/church even comes close. If you know so much more as an individual, why not try actually helping someone learn half of what you know about Christ's "good news" instead of spending your life trying to upstage the Watchtower society?

“Have you considered that recent natural disasters—the South Asian Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, et cetera—are the work of our Creator and a sign of the End of Days?”

God's Word is ALIVE, BUT (Don't Read It.) Do Not Research your Bible.

(2 Timothy 3:16) 16 All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, BUT, DON'T READ your Bible.

(Acts 17:11) . . .Now the latter were more noble-minded than those in Thes·sa·lo·ni′ca, for they received the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily as to whether these things were so.. . . BUT! THEY COULD NOT READ THE BIBLE> Instead, They waited for each NEW Watchtower and Awake and NEW BOOK. God wants you to be HAPPY, Not loaded down Reading his Bible. No, For there are Others Appointed to do Just that. Sit down, Relax and Curl up with a NEW WATCHTOWER or NEW AWAKE OR NEW BOOK. DON'T READ YOUR BIBLE.

    *** w67 6/1 p. 338 par. 12 Move Ahead with Jehovah’s Organization ***

We may think of study as hard work, as involving heavy research. But in Jehovah’s organization it is not necessary to spend a lot of time and energy in research, for there are brothers in the organization who are assigned to do that very thing, to help you who do not have so much time for this, these preparing the good material in The Watchtower and other publications of the Society. But you do not study enough? Take this suggestion: Often the very best and most beneficial studying you do is that done when you read a new Watchtower or Awake! or a new book with the joy of getting the new truths and a fresh view. You remember the points. You talk enthusiastically to others about them. So try this: Pick up each Watchtower or Awake! as it comes and read it, just for the joy and pleasure it gives. Remember, you are not sitting down to study, just to enjoy the information. This will increase your joy of reading and will give you incentive for more definite, organized study. Jehovah wants you to enjoy your study. He does not want it to be drudgery to you. He is the happy God,

YES, Enjoy your Study of the BOOKS. But Please don't read your Bible. After all, If you read your Bible You would question those taking the Lead among you.

Jehovah could be approached and asked Questions.
Jesus could be approached and asked Questions.

But If you Question the Elders, The Organization You might as well say Good Bye to your Family. That is why they don't let the Internet into the Homes, FREE INFORMATION, Why you cannot Talk to a Disfellowshipped person. You might find out they were RIGHT.

May Jehovah Rebuke those that Cause Stumbling. WOE Woe WOE.

Ranny, read "Then is Finished the Mystery of God", you will see the diagrams of the Great Pyramid and how Charles Taze Russell arrived at the 1914 date by measuring the lenghts of the interior passages, so its not from the Bible.

But he then worked out how to get the Bible to also show 1914 to get his "Two Witnessses", (the Bible and the Great Pyramid), but this need a slight adjustment, he had to use the date 607 bce to arrive at 1914, despite the fact that even the Jews themselves give a slightly differant date.

The proof of the pudding though is all the following prophisies concerning the 31/2 years or 1260 days, this important witness to all the world has now been totally forgotton by the rest of the world and as for the climax of the book of Daniel being the Cedar Point assembly in 1922, that is laughable, the ones that are :-

12 “Happy is the one who is keeping in expectation and who arrives at the one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days!

13 “And as for you yourself, go toward the end; and you will rest, but you will stand up for your lot at the end of the days.”

are the Great Crowd who survive faithfully through armaggeddon into the new world following the 3 1/2 year persecution under the King of the North or the New World Order, thats why they are happy! they survive into the promised land, not because they attended some dumb assembly nearly 90 years ago!

Did you know that the society disfellowships any of the Annointed who try to shed "New Light", hence they are stuck on 1914 and it will be the death of them.

As for World War One breaking out in 1914, did you know Russell was a Zionist in communication with the most powerfull man on Earth?, the Jewish banker Rothchild?, who is also looking for ways of convincing the world of the legitamy of his Satanic Fleshly Jeruslem, it was he who started the First World war, makes you wonder why he chose the date 1914 having been speaking to Russell?

From the column written by Justin Moyer, he does not need the advice of disgruntled individuals who may have been Jehovah's Witnesses at one time. They might be compared to Judas Iscariot, who was a Christian at one time and decided the faith he formerly embraced did not meet his needs or he no longer agreed with the tenets of the faith. He betrayed a man and a faith. He had his own views, and sought to cause havoc with the believers by "going after them" so to speak. He made it known to authorities by false accustaions he felt would or could further his cause either with money or favor.

Justin Moyer displays a clever response to Jehovah's Witnesses, and is clearly smart enough not to buy in to acrimonious explanations by people who were most likely disfellowshipped (excommunicated)from the organization of Jehovah's Witnesses for their conduct.

No matter how thin a pancake is, there are ALWAYS two sides. Justin Moyer can choose his own views.

Justin, big fan of el guapo / antelope.

Im also a JW. Ive been in the position before, where you know people are home, but they don't answer. But that's part of the work, and you're prepared to get yelled at, to have a gun pulled on you, or to even be ignored (Priests often tell their parishoners to hide, not to answer the door, or be engaged in conversation. Why not? They're often paid by those parishoners, lose a few and you're losing money. The same churches by the way who burnt people who owned bibles). To have the police give you a hard time, eventhough the supreme court has repeatedly protected door to door. I do so because I feel compelled. It comes from my heart. And for every bad case you hear, there are many more really great experiences, which makes sharing my beliefs very satisfying.

Why else would an organization of just over 6 million active members worldwide have made such a name for themselves? Face to face communication has all but disappeared. People should be thankful that someone has donated their time to share what's important to them. I could be at the beach. Very few people openly, daily practice free speech. And when they do so, they're mostly insulated within their social group, or behind a wall of pundits and cameras, or radio mics eschewing a linear view of the world, to a linear audience. Catholic to Catholic, Democrat to Democrat, Conservative to Conservative, Rich to Rich, Orioles fans to Orioles fans, Pro life to Pro life, bla bla bla. When all you do is preach to the converted (no pun intended), you only pull your side farther away from the other.

Tell me this Ranny I will question you and you inform me...
Where does the Bible state the Jesus is not medator for all men? The society teaches this but where is it in the Bible?

The society says there are two great tribulations but the Bible says there is only one. Why

Where does the Bible teach 1914 is the year of the Lord's return from context?

Where does the Bible teach that Christians are not suppose to partake of the emblems?

Where does the Bible say that only certain Christains are in the new covenant?

WHere does the Bible say that it is wrong to wear a cross? if you say that it is pagan symbol, why do you not get rid of your wedding ring if you are married?

If the great tribulation is supose to be over all of the earth, why is it that only those in Jerusalem are told to flee to the mountains?

The Bible states you do not know the day nor the hour. How come the society has told people to ignore this (Wt 68)

When did the Bible ever teach that you could not have a transplant?

WHere does the Bible say that you cannot celebrate holidays?

WHy is it that when every other religion grows it is "Satan misleading people" but when the Society grows it is "Jehovah is blessing his organization"?

Jesus stated that there were some in his time that would not taste death until they saw the son of man come in his kingdom. Yet the Society ignores this statement. Why?

I have a lot more questions than those but see what you can do with them.

I have a Google News Alert for the word Jehovah. So I see articles in various blogs and online newspapers from around the world. Many of these allow comments. And all of these have a comment from Danny Hazard. Almost always, it's the first comment.

Perhaps he has a computer programme to do it for him. The comments are always the same, and have no relationship with the actual content of the story.

My cousin was going from door-to-door and talked to a lady who was so thankful because she was about to commit suicide.

An operations manager for McxDonalds says his mother welcomes Jehovah's Witnesses because she is old and does not get out. She will never change, but she is always encouraged by a visit.

A young man comes to the door and checks in back with his mother and says she is not at home. A youngster was more honest, "My mother says she is not at home." Is this what we want to teach our children?

During wars, Jehovah's Witnesses are neutral. They refused to support Hitler, and he imprisoned 4,200 in the concentration camps, a thousand were executed, and another thousand died from the conditions there. They would rather give their lives than kill American boys. Jehovah's Witnesses is the only religion that truly believes, "Thou shalt not kill."

Anyone speaking abusively of Jehovah's Witnesses and His earthly organization have either:

    1. Been a Witness themselves and things didn't work out how THEY thought it should; thus leaving (very selfishly) Not "RELYING ON JEHOVAH" to eventually rectify the situation or clarify their thinking.

OR----2. They have formed an ignorant opinion; not even knowing the what it means to be one of Jehovah's Witnesses; thereby allowing others to make up your mind for you!

The Watchtower and other publications of the Society are just aids to understand the Bible and no replacement for the Bible.

You are one of the lucky ones who got away. I was raised as a JW and I panicked every day of my young life that I would have an accident that would require a life-saving blood transfusion and I would be denied because my parents love the Watch Tower more than they loved me. Since then, I have found so much more wrong with the Watch Tower that I cannot even begin to enumerate here--both morally and Scripturally. The Watch Tower is NOT a Christian organization. In fact, it is anti-Christian, anti-Christ, and anti-Scripture. What is promoted is a false gospel by a false prophet organization.

  • Jean

Rick Fernandez, you said, "1. Been a Witness themselves and things didn’t work out how THEY thought it should; thus leaving (very selfishly) Not “RELYING ON JEHOVAH” to eventually rectify the situation or clarify their thinking." Many of those who leave JW's do it for bigger reasons than "it didn't work out like they thought it should." That is an ignorant, self-serving statement that the Watchtower B&TS tells those who remain so that they will feel disloyal to even question the man made organization and incorporated Watchtower Bible and Tract Society(You have apparently bought into the propaganda). Because then it becomes a matter of loyalty to the organization rather than whether a teaching is right or wrong. It is wrong and disloyal to Jehovah for a JW to leave the org. when they know a teaching is unbiblical-they are to WAIT upon Jehovah to clarify things. Basically, if one leaves the WT org. for the SAME reasons they are told to leave their previous religious faith it is a demonstration that they do not love truth, whereas previously it proved that they loved the 'truth'. Loyalty is more important than truth in the organization. It is a juvenile attitude at best, incredibly manipulative and controlling at worst.

I know many who believe that the society is run by Jehovah and that the faithful and discreet slave are directed by him. However you might want to check on how various issues are voted on by the " group of ten" You know how your brothers and sister were persecuted in Malawi for not being allowed to work in Hospitals for military service, and hence many were punished, did you know that Jw"s is Mexico are allowed to bribe officials to stay out of miltary service and this has been agreed to by the discreet slave? Sounds odd, it's OK to bribe an official but not OK to work in a hospital.
You really need to read " Crisis of Concience" and ask yourself why so many bethel servents in the 1980's were disfellowshipped for wanting to tell the TRUTH

The Watchtower Organization has brought nothing but pain and division in my family. The first lie is when they tell their home owner that they would like to have a 'bible study' with them. It is always a study of Watchtower material so that they can change the message that the bible provides for us. The Watchtower publications are as important to the survival of this high control group as the Book of Mormon insures the survival of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons).
When one accepts literature from the door knocker they have just set themselves up for a back call (probably in a few weeks). Don't even take the literature.

Anyone speaking abusively of Jehovah’s Witnesses and His earthly organization have either:

    1. Been a Witness themselves and things didn’t work out how THEY thought it should; thus leaving (very selfishly) Not “RELYING ON JEHOVAH” to eventually rectify the situation or clarify their thinking.

Tell me what part did Jehovah have in telling a lie for 70 years that the heavenly hope ended in 1935?

When did Jehovah tell the GB that 1925 was the year that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob would be resurrected in 1925?

It is NOT selfish if a person leaves an org after seeing that they did not have the truth. What IS selfish is for an org to tell people things and be wrong about them and say a person is arrogant for leaving.

OR—-2. They have formed an ignorant opinion; not even knowing the what it means to be one of Jehovah’s Witnesses; thereby allowing others to make up your mind for you!

I WAS one of Jehovah's Witnesses for thirty five years. Then I found out about the UN, the sex scandels, the utterly wrong doctrines, the lack of love, the selling of the liturature. All of these things are fact, and yet when I told an elder about them what did they say to me? You need readjusting. I told him the truth in which Bethel acknowledged and yet I am arrogant for disagreeing with it?

Jehovah’s people are HAPPY people; they KNOW THE TRUTH; and are doing God’s will in sharing that truth with others.

I can honestly say that after being one of them, they are NOT a happy people. That is for show. I knew a lot of them that had a drinking problem. Many of them were depressed for years. There were a few (mainly the ones who had athourity) but for the most part most of the ones I know were miserible but were afraid to show it.

What really hurts me about all this negative talk about Jehovah's Witnesses is that no one realizes that they are talking about Jehovah God Almighty and His organization. Without Jehovah, none of us would be alive at all. Don't get mad at the Witnesses because you are a rebel and fell short of being able to apply Bible principals to your life and get yourself together. You obviously want to do things your way and not JEHOVAH's way. Jehovah doesn't have to change for you...You have to make the changes for Him. He exists and will always exist...You will not. So arguing against his righteous principals and trying to make His organization out to be a cult or some negative place is purely stupid.

Why are you taking so much of your time trying to tear down an organization that is going nowhere and is growing day by day. Jehovah's Witnesses are going to continue to spread the good news of Jehovah's Kingdom because that is what Jesus did when he was on earth. Jesus set the model for us to follow. So,if you don't like witnesses or what they teach, then that's your choice; but don't try to spoil someone else's chance to change their lives for the better and obtain everlasting life. If you want to die, do that on your own. Don't try to spoil it for everybody else.

I speak this way because I have had the opportunity to study all of the religions on this earth and compare and contrast each without bias and to my surprise, the teachings of the Jehovah's Witnesses are the ONLY teachings that match that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. They are the ONLY organization on this earth that are following what Jesus taught while he was on the earth. They don't just come close as some religions do, they are doing it!

In addition, some of you who have something negative to say about witnesses have never visited a Kingdom Hall in your lives. You just go by what you have heard someone say or what they saw. You can not make a fair judgement of something you have never experienced. You have to remember. We all are individuals and we all do things differently. What the Jehovah Witness Society does is share to the world exactly what the Bible teaches. It is up to us to take that information and apply it to our lives. Jehovah God is an organized God and he does things in an organized manner. If you don't like the way He does things then that's your problem. Jehovah has put in place an organization that will help anyone change their life and perhaps obtain everlasting life but you must do it His way and not your way. For example, if you created something and you tried to teach someone how to work it, you wouldn't want that someone you are trying to teach to use it in the wrong way or try to tell you how to work the item you created. No, you would want them to use your creation just the way you created it to be used. It's the same with Jehovah. He created us and He knows what it will take for us to live forever. He knows what is best for us.

So all you haters and stupid ones who are too ignorant to see that Jehovah only wants us to live clean, good lives forever, go ahead with your bashing and negative words because you will be destroyed along with satan in the end and we will be happy that you are not around to cause or stir up any more problems. We look forward to enjoying a world of paradise, just like Jehovah promises and we all know He cannot lie!

  • Taylor

In regards to RSM's comments...Mr. RSM, I am a Jehovah's Witness and I am insulted that you and all those who were ones witnesses would lie about Jehovah's organization. There is no way on earth that anyone at Bethel acknowledged any "UN, sex scandels, utterly wrong doctrines, lack of love, or selling of any liturature" that you are stating. Bethel always stays neutral and only responds according to what the scriptures say and they always respond in writing, so if you do not have anything in writing from them acknowleding what you are claiming, you are obviously lying.

In addition, I am a happy person and so are thousands of other witnesses. if I am not, it certainly is not because I am a witness. No one is making me be a witness. I am being one because I love Jehovah. There are a lot of people I know who make me unhappy that are not witnesses. There are millions of people in the world who are unhappy and they are not witnesses. You on the other hand sound more unhappy than anyone and you are obviously not a witness now, so what is your excuse. I think it is because you do need readjusting, just like the elders said. You really need to remember where your life comes from. If it were not for Jehovah, you would not wake up every morning. Don't focus on the negative, remember the good times you had as a witness and I am sure they outweigh the negative. We have to remember that when we go to the Kingdom Hall, it is to worship Jehovah. We can not worry about what this person is doing and what that person is doing because in the end, we will be held accountable for our own actions not the actions of others. Humans have the bad habit of worrying about what someone else is doing. Talking negative about the Jehovah's witnesses simply because you couldn't live right is not fair. Fortunately, there are some of us out there that don't let others like you lead us astray because we love Jehovah and no matter what anyone says, we are going to stand up for Jehovah, His organization, and what is right.

My advise to you and all other ex-Jehovah's Witnesses...Stop lying about Jehovah's organization when you stop associating or being one. Whatever caused you to not be a Jehovah's Witness, I suggest you work it out because the end of days is near and you don't want to be on the wrong side of the fence when the end comes...Get it together people!

I am a young witness, the reason I am posting something in this wall is for the person telling the story. I was raised as a witness and then decided not to follow the faith anymore in my mid teens. In the world I saw myself filled with many disappointments, because the reality is that inside all of us is a need and yes i say need for something that is bigger than us and what we see, a spiritual need. The unfortunate reality is that we try desperately to fill that need with material things, fame, money, pleasures, and everything but a spiritual life. And in this process we acquire nothing but heartaches and big problems. After a couple of years i decided to give God a chance in my life..just stop for a moment and think about that..what does God need from us imperfect humans? nothing at all yet, he loves us to the point that he wants "us" to give him a chance to show us how life is supposed to be, and he does so through his word the Bible which we as Jehovah's Witnesses encourage people to read, in contrast to what others might insinuate. TheBible is not ancient book, it is a guideline that is practical to our vey day, I had to find this the heard way by making many mistakes before realizing that spirituality is the essence of life. In the end is up to each person to decide what they want out of their lives, we don;t force believes on anyone, all we do is deliver the message that the Bible sends to each individual, it is up to that person wether to take it or reject it, that message is God's advice through the Bible, you're not turning your back or slamming doors on just witnesses but on a Biblical message also. I personally hope that you consider reading the Bible, and meditating upon it, for your own life benefit, and if you need any help understanding it be sure that any Jehovah's Witness will be more than pleased to sit with you and discuss it
