The latest scuttlebutt around my Mount Pleasant group house is that there may be not just a rat presence in the patio area out back, but a raccoon and possum presence as well.
Maybe it's just part of the cost of living close to Rock Creek Park. What’s the fauna report in your neighborhood?

Although I no longer live in Mt. Pleasant, I had rats in the alley, 'possums in the ivy and raccoons on the roof. Most of them got along, except there was the occasional raccoon power struggle - a rather dramatic affair at 4 in the morning.
Opossums, by the way, rarely carry rabies (most likely because of their low body temperature) and is the only native marsupial in North America. They are essentially unchanged (e.g. unevolved) since dinosaurs were on this planet, and are probably the progenitor of all mammals. So be nice to the pokey old fellow.

When I lived in Glover Park, the rear of our apartment building backed right into the park. We had lots of raccoons, plus possums, foxes and deer.
