How do other large urban school systems handle their textbooks? Yes, the District school system needs improvement, but I would to see some media coverage on some school systems that handle their textbooks and supplies efficiently. I agree with Cherkis that volunteers aren't going to solve this problem alone.

As I understand it, all DC textbooks have barcodes, so input of book transfer information should not take much time or expertise. In a hurry? Borrow some stock clerks from CVS or Giant.

No, any online retailer will tell you that there's no reason at all, and in fact much substantial savings and efficiency gains made by shipping from third party to third party without warehouse storage. This is based on the business concept of Just In Time delivery, but is slightly different. You'll find that Amazon, countless ebay dealers, and other online businesses ship from producer to consumer, eliminating the need for warehouses.

The trick is only to track such transfers in a reliable database or computer system.

I understand you're a journalist and not working in business process reengineering and you aren't Six Sigma certified, but please, Just In Time is ancient business history!
