One of the most intriguing aspects of DC politics, unlike Chicago and San Francisco, is how a Councilmember or the Mayor does something behind a closed door or in the middle of the night, completely out of the oversight of the public, and after some heat, a bit of contrition, a few concessions of “should haves” continues to screw the public, flip them the proverbial “bird,” and keep moving.

Oh there is the obligatory; few crumbs left on the plate – the Tiverton – or the like, and upon closer examination, the “ink” on the “contract” has turned invisible. That comes under the “I’m shocked, shocked to find that what I thought was there, isn’t there!,” routine. Afterwards, comes the fuzzy memory for one who prizes himself on his “sharp as a razor,” memory on when events took place. The coup de grâce is the “slide on by” move that says to the public: “Leave me alone, you stupid fools. Politics and moneymaking is too important to be left up to the general public and democracy.”
And in the District, after about twenty minutes; the crowd dissipates, goes back under the rocks, until the next time they’re riled, roiled and rolled.
