Worker's jumpsuits to interact with the community? A jumpsuit aint a jumpsuit unless you do some real labor and get dirty. These artists with there moisterized hands need real labor. My garbage truck could use extra help. There's no better way of interacting with the community than seeing all the shit people throw out.

Earnest, Are you from the "Hey Vern" movies? I thought you died several years ago. As for your "piss artist" comment, why such cynicism? The Workingman Collective isn't making any grand statement; it's a very humble project. And that's its strength. Artmaking isn't confined to painting and sculpture, thank God. Pioneering artists, such as the sublilme (and kind of creepy) Gilbert & George, have greatly expanded the parameters of art. It's hardly old hat. Cheers to the WC. Keep reaching for the sky.

Actually, Ernest your bullshit detector might need an upgrade. :)

Collaborative artist groups have enjoyed a resurgence in the past 10 years with teams involving rotating project specific members as well as smaller groups who have been working together for years. Some artist groups include biologists and engineers as well as artists and the work comes out in a joint name with the individual artist names immersed in the collective.

As for commissions, if you like birds, what's more helpful for the birds- artful educational birdhouse project or a painting/sculpture of birds using toxic or polluting art materials (oil paints, bronze, resins, etc.)? Plenty of countries, cities, community groups and even the National Parks Service have programs in place to support this kind of work.

Check out http://greenmuseum.org for other examples of environmental art as well as a simple Google search for collaborative art to see how widespread this approach is.

No sooner had I finished reading the piece than my bullshit detector emitted an audible beep. Artist collectives, eh? Piss artist, more like it. That Gilbert and George thing is an obsolete hat. What kind of idiot would commission such nonsense, anyhow?
